Good
afternoon everyone,
I hope you had a wonderful weekend!
We had a very jam packed weekend. Saturday was Mark’s birthday, his kids
work Christmas party and our Elf Charlie made his return. There was a lot of excitement on Saturday morning!! Sunday we went to cut down our Christmas tree at
Wintersinger’s Tree Farm and then had a breakfast dinner and gift exchange with
our fantastic neighbours.
Welcome back, Charlie!
Hersey kids Christmas party!
Oh Christmas tree, oh Christmas tree....

Inquiry into
Mathematics
Today
we discussed adding and subtracting decimals. It is simply adding and
subtracting, but you add a decimal. Don’t forget to add your units: $, Kg, cm,
etc.
Points to remember:
4.9
= 4 and 9/10 (tenths)
4.99
= 4 and 99/100 (hundredths)
4.999
= 4 and 99/1000 (thousandths)
¼
= 0.25
½
= 0.50
¾
= 0.75
-
2.25 million is written in standard form as
2,
250, 000.
As
a decimal we write it as 2.25 million (2 whole million + 0.25 million) and as a
fraction it is ¼ of a million (25 is ¼ of 100).

Expanded Form:

Thousandths
is located 3 spots after the decimal in the place value chart (0.000).
Fractions to decimals: 6/1000 = .006,
17/1000 = .017, 123/1000 = .123, 2 321/1000 = 2.321. **Remember that when
saying the number the decimal = and. For example, 2.123 = two and one hundred
and twenty three thousandths.**
When
comparing and ordering numbers, we need to remember that as we go from tenths
to thousandths the numbers get smaller. So 0.406 is smaller than 0.457, and 6.0
is bigger than 5.976.
Rounding rules are 0-4 round down
and 5-9 round up.
