Hello everyone!

I hope you had a great day yesterday!

As of now, the school is now closed until Monday, April 6 and all trips and upcoming school events have been postponed – I will update you if anything changes. My blog will be updated on a daily basis for 9:00 AM. I will be using a variety of tools to do this! I will also be available via email and Bloomz, so please do not hesitate to reach out. Report cards and graphs are to be sent home on Friday, April 10. Spelling Bee rules and lists have been sent home – a new date for the Top 6 and SJA Spelling Bee to be announced soon. Caribou Math Contest will continue as scheduled.** For our coding unit, which begins in May, students will need to have a working laptop and email address, as they will be required to send their work to me via email. Gmail accounts were most popular last year!**

Inquiry into Mathematics

Today in math, we learned about improper fractions and mixed number fractions. An improper fraction is a fraction in which the numerator (top number) is greater or equal to the denominator (bottom number). Example 22/10. A mixed number fraction is numbers that entail both an integer (whole number) and a fraction. For example, 2 wholes and 2/10. We learned that to convert a mixed number fraction to an improper fraction you must multiply the whole number by the denominator, and then add the numerator. ** The denominator will always remain the same**. To convert an improper fraction into a mixed number you must divide the numerator by the denominator. Please see below for more detail.

Points to Remember

3   is an example of a proper fraction. In any fraction the top
4  number is called the numerator. The bottom number is called a denominator.

7   is an example of an improper fraction…big number on top.
5

11   is a mixed number. It has a whole number and a
     2   fraction.

Equivalent fractions are fractions that are equal to each other. For example, ½ = 2/4=6/8.

12/16=3/4.

To find an equivalent fraction with a greater numerator and denominator, multiply the numerator and denominator by the same number. For example, 5/12 = 10/24 (2 x 5 and 2 x 12) and 25/60 (5 x 5 and 5 x 12).

To find equivalent fractions with a lesser numerator and denominator, divide the numerator and denominator by the same number. For example, 24/60 = 4/10 (24/6 and 60/6). When we find an equivalent fraction by dividing, you simplify the fraction. 24/60 = 4/10 = 2/5 (4/2 and 10/2). This is the simplest form as the only factor into both 2 and 5 is 1.

Unit of Inquiry

Today we discussed biodiversity, such as what is biodiversity and what are the advantages of having diversity in living things. We examined classification in real life, such as how are classification systems used in a library or grocery store. Lastly we began our discussion about the five kingdoms; protist, monera, animal, fungi and plant!

Gym – Mr. Orr Monday, Wednesday and Friday 1:30-2:00
Good morning and welcome to online learning! I hope you have all had a restful March break! The way Phys. Ed. will run for the coming weeks is a little different than regular school hours. We will have a “live” time online on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 1:30-2 in my Phys. Ed. Discord channel. Here I will share expectations and requirements for the week and answer any questions students may have. There are two requirements for the students to complete throughout the week. These requirements include some physical activity and a health activity.

For the physical portion, each morning on Discord and on the classroom blog I will post a physical activity challenge. It will be something simple and I will do my best to show the students exactly what I want them to do. Students will need to record themselves completing the challenge and send it to me either on Discord or by email (if they have a YouTube channel they can upload it to YouTube and send me the link). To go along with this challenge I have also attached a tracker for students to keep track of their physical activity. Students are expected to be active for at least 30 minutes a day. This can be done at separate times throughout the day or all at once. The activity challenge I post can be a part of it but it will not be long enough to cover the full 30 minutes, so students will need to choose their own activity to fill the rest of their time. Once they record their activity on the calendar it will need to be signed by a parent or guardian. At the end of the week, students will take a picture or scan a copy of their completed weekly calendar with signatures, and send it to me by email to prove they have been active every day! So, go out and be active, but remember to continue practicing your social distancing and healthy habits!

For the Health portion, students will be given a task on Monday that needs to be worked on throughout the week and submitted on Friday. I will explain the task, work through questions and give examples during my live online time in my Discord classroom on Mondays from 1:30-2. I will also be available anytime from 9-3:45 on both Discord or by email to answer any questions students have or to give support. I will give reminders about these tasks daily on the classroom morning blog and on Discord, and I will be sharing my experiences through this time as well. Our first weekly health task is outlined below. I will give further details on Monday during our “class time.”

Today we will be talking about students future plans to get them ready for tomorrow's class which, is the revision of the future simple. Today will be an oral class. Students questions will be answered via Discord text channels and voice channels will be used.
