Just a reminder to send your child with proper outdoor gear…coats, boots, hats, mitts, and snow pants.

St. Jude's Academy Cold Weather Policy

Below you will find the steps taken at St. Jude's Academy to ensure students stay safe and have fun during the winter months.

1 Reduce amount of time students spend outdoors when the temperature is –20 degrees Celsius or colder, with or without the wind chill. Students will stay indoors when the temperature is -20 degrees Celsius or colder, with or without wind chill.

2 Understand that some medical conditions may increase sensitivity to cold. Parents should consult their physician and provide a written notice if a child has a need to stay indoor. 

3     Ensure students are dressed warmly, covering exposed skin: insulated boots, winter weight coats, mittens, hats, neck warmers.

4 Ensure students change wet clothing or footwear immediately.

5 Although these conditions are unlikely to occur during the school day, ensure that all staff are able to recognize and treat symptoms of frostbite and hypothermia. Given plenty of warm fluids to prevent dehydration.

6 When children are outside, be watchful for shivering or signs of numbness in faces, ears, hands or feet.

7 Educate children in dealing with cold weather: drinking plenty of fluids, dressing warmly, and recognizing signs of cold injury.

February lunch forms and after care payments are due Friday, January 22 by 3:30 PM.

Friday, January 22 is International Day. This is a class project that we will be working on during class. Parents are welcome to view our project from 2:30-3:15 in the auditorium. Spain will be the country that we have researched. The students have been put into groups to research a topic.

MATH

Today completed our first lesson on reading data in tables. Students had to use the information provided to answer questions. We also wrote out some key terms. The unit math test will begin Thursday, January 21 with an in class survey and construction of graphs and then the in class unit test will take place Monday, January 25.

LANUGAGE

Today we began lesson 15 in our spelling books. Just a reminder that the spelling test will take place on Friday. We also began looking at how to write a report, as our OWA term 2 assessments will take place on Thursday. I have started a reading logbook for the students. They are expected to read for at least 20 minutes everyday. They can record it in their reading log. Reading logs will be checked every Friday. The first one will be checked on Friday, January 15^th.

UOI

Today we looked at balanced and unbalanced forces. We used our Science and Technology to do some reading and answer some questions.

Today we did our pre-assessment for Data Management. Our first lesson will be on Monday. The unit math test will begin Thursday, January 21 with an in class survey and construction of graphs and then the in class unit test will take place Monday, January 25.

LANUGAGE

Today we did a round of Daily 5 in which students did word work, listen to reading, work on writing, and read to self. We also spent some time reading our in class novel study ‘It’s All Relative.’  I have started a reading logbook for the students. They are expected to read for at least 20 minutes everyday. They can record it in their reading log. Reading logs will be checked every Friday. The first one will be checked on Friday, January 15^th.

UOI

Today we used books on Forces and wrote out jot notes. We were paired up and given a specific book to read and review. We have about 3 more weeks of this unit, about a week to two weeks of lessons and a week to a week and a half of the summative. More information to come in the following weeks!

Today we visited the library for some quiet reading time, while some of us did our DRAs. We also took up the spelling homework from over the holidays.  I have started a reading log book for the students. They are expected to read for at least 20  minutes everyday. They can record it in their reading log. Reading logs will be checked every Friday. The first one will be checked on Friday, January 15^th.

Today we looked at what forces can do. We did a couple of experiments with Play-Doh and cars to see who we could change the shape and speed of the items. We have about 3 more weeks of this unit, about a week to two weeks of lessons and a week to a week and a half of the summative. More information to come in the following weeks!

Enjoying our time in the library!

Good afternoon,

Happy New Year! I hope everyone enjoyed their holiday break. Our family certainly did. We headed up north for Christmas and then spent the last week at home. It was very busy but a good busy!

For math today, we completed a cumulative review of chapters 1-4. We will have our Data Management pre-assessment on Friday and begin lesson 1 of that unit on Monday. Please have your child bring in a device tomorrow for math, as we will be playing some games. Those of you who do not have a device they can partner up with someone. The unit math test will begin Thursday, January 21 with an in class survey and construction of graphs and then the in class unit test will take place Monday, January 25.

LANUGAGE

Today was our reading buddies day with Ms. Bannon’s JKs! We also had a period to do Daily 5. DRA’s (Developmental Reading Assessments) have also begun and will continue on throughout the week.
