St. Jude’s Academy is excited to welcome back to our school the talented artists from ArtReach Mississauga to lead exciting art workshops for our students. Students will have a chance to join the ArtReach professionals for a two-hour workshop at SJA that focuses on engaging and comprehensive visual art activities. ArtReach will be joining SJA on November 30^th, December 1^st, and December 2^nd. The cost of the workshop is $15.00. This cost includes the workshop fee, and all materials. Forms and fees are due back to the school by November 3^rd, 2016. Forms were sent home yesterday!

LANGUAGE:

Today we read two chapters of Anne! We completed the comprehension questions from yesterday as well as todays!

Homework - Remember to read for 30 minutes each night!

MATH:

Today we began our first lesson on money. Again a very, very tough concept for students. We reviewed what each coin and bill represented and then did some work out of our textbook.

UOI:

Today we joined Ms. Schwarz’s grade 4 class again to do some experiments. We examined where sound comes from- vibrations. We used rulers, our throats, made Kazoos, and used a rubber band on a baking dish! We are having so much fun doing these experiments. Ask them is sound and where does it come from!

There are two ways to order books from scholastic.

1) Fill out the form and along with a cheque send back to school. No cash will be accepted

2) Order online via Parent Pay. The website is https://parentpay.scholastic.ca/pay. All you have to do is fill in the four fields (province, city, school name – St Judes Academy – no period or apostrophe, and teacher name – Dawn Goulart). Once you have completed your order online, please fill out the Scholastic book order form and send it back to me.

Today we explored elapsed time – the time it takes to complete an activity. This is another tricky concept for students so please assist at home with homework!

UOI:

Today we joined Ms. Schwarz’s grade 4 class to do some experiments. We used yogurt containers, a tuning fork, salt, plastic wrap, and water. The salt jumped and made a buzzing sound and the water splashed about. Vibrations was a new word we used a lot today! The students had a lot of fun. Ask them what happened when we hit our shoe once and then twice!

LANGUAGE:

Today we began lesson #7 in our spelling workbooks. This lesson was about consonant blends, such as sk, ld, lk, cr, pt, sk, nk, tw, and st and vowel pairs ai, ay, oa, ow. We were also able to read a chapter of Anne!

- Sign and return spelling test – write out wrong words 10 X

MATH:

Today we finally got back at it. Today we examined estimating time. Remember an estimate is a reasonable guess. A reminder for students to include the units of measurement when answering questions, such as hours, minutes, day, weeks, etc. We began by estimating how long it would take some of our classmates to say the alphabet, both the regular way and backwards!

UOI:

Today we began our second UOI unit – Loud and Clear (How the World Works - Light and Sound). We began by creating a KWL chart about light and sound, completing a ‘find all the sounds’ activity, and beginning our title page.
