How the world works - What’s the Matter?

An inquiry into the natural world and its laws; the interaction between the natural world (physical and biological) and human societies; how humans use their understanding of scientific principles; the impact of scientific and technological advances on society and on the environment.

Central Idea: The states of matter are altered in order to apply them to practical and useful situations.

Key Concepts and Related Concepts: Connection, Form, Change & Characteristics, Transformation, Systems

Lines of Inquiry: Characteristics of each of the three states of matter in our surrounding environment, understanding how the change in states of matter work in society, and the connection of states of matter in practical situations.

Summative - Science Fair Project

Where we are in place and time - A Voyage Back in Time

An inquiry into orientation in place and time; personal histories; homes and journeys; the discoveries, explorations and migrations of humankind; the relationships between and the interconnectedness of individuals and civilizations, from local and global perspectives.

Central Idea: Early civilizations have shaped how the world is today.

Key Concepts and Related Concepts: Form, Change, Connection & Similarities/Differences, Relationships

Lines of Inquiry: Life in the Ancient Times, how societies have changed over time, and the contributions that ancient civilizations have made toward contemporary societies.

Who we are - The Human Body

An inquiry into the nature of the self; beliefs and values; personal, physical, mental, social and spiritual health; human relationships including families, friends, communities, and cultures; rights and responsibilities; what it means to be human.

Central Idea: The human body is a highly organized structure made up of different systems that work together to accomplish functions necessary to sustain life.

Lines of Inquiry: The structure and function of systems and organs of the human body, the relationship between organs within each system, and factors contributing to good health.

How we organize ourselves - Vote. It's the Right Thing to Do

An inquiry into the interconnectedness of human-made systems and communities; the structure and function of organizations; societal decision-making; economic activities and their impact on humankind and the environment.

Central Idea: Different philosophies determine how a government rules.

Key Concepts and Related Concepts: Perspective, Responsibility, Function & Structure, Rights, Beliefs

Lines of Inquiry: The roles of different levels of government and how they impact our society, the rights and responsibilities of members of society, and Canada’s political parties.

An inquiry into rights and responsibilities in the struggle to share finite resources with other people and with other living things; communities and the relationships within and between them; access to equal opportunities; peace and conflict resolution.

Central Idea: Maintaining biodiversity is critical to the health of the planet.

Lines of Inquiry: The classification systems, how interacting systems rely on one another, and human impact on diversity.

How we express ourselves - Creativity Through Coding

An inquiry into the ways in which we discover and express ideas, feelings, nature, culture, beliefs and values; the ways in which we reflect on, extend and enjoy our creativity; our appreciation of the aesthetic.

Central Idea: Increasing technology advancements gives rise to unique forms of expression and creativity.

Key Concepts and Related Concepts: Causation, Perspective, Beliefs & Patterns, Impact

Lines of Inquiry: How coding allows us to express ourselves virtually, the impact of increasing technology in our daily lives, and the ethics of developing technologies.

What is Action?

Many people think that Action is easy to define. It is something you do, right? But Action is much more than that. Action is a part of who we are. If we want to change the world we need to start with changing ourselves. But sometimes change is hard. How do we make changes to the way we think so we can help the world?

If we want children to make a difference in the world we need to help them personalize the action they take, and understand that it is not just a mandate from their teachers and parents, but a life long mindset they develop.

Taking action can happen at any age. It’s all about how we as parents, educators, and the community, support children and youth as they begin the learning journey towards becoming adults that are change agents!
