Good afternoon everyone!
Happy New Year! I hope
everyone enjoyed their holiday break. My family most certainly did, even though
we dealt with fevers, two rounds of the croup, and bacterial infections!! We stayed in Georgetown
for Christmas with my family, then made our way up north to spend some time
with Mark’s family. We spent New Year’s Eve with some very close and long time
friends and then took it easy the last week!

Important information and reminders:
It is hard to believe, but the
time is here already – re-registration is upon us! Re-registrations
forms were sent home earlier. The deadline to re-register is February 9.
After that we open up spaces to the public. Do not delay – reserve your spot
today for grade 5!
International Mindedness Day will be taking place on Friday, January 20 from 2:30-3:15 and parents
are more than welcome to join us. This is an in class project, which we will be
working on from now until January 20th. The country we have chosen
is Japan and students have been placed into groups. If you have not already
brought in a book on your topic, please do so as soon as possible.
Year Ahead Day will be taking place on Wednesday, January 25. This allows grade 4 to spend a day as a grade 5 student. Students always look forward to this day!
Language
Today we began work on our Japan International Mindedness Day project.
We used the research we collected over the holidays and began the rough copies.
A reminder that all work is to be done in class and all final copies will be
due by Thursday, January 19.
Homework – if you have yet to bring in a book for your Japan topic
please do so
Beginning our Japan rough copies!
Math
Today we began our unit on Multiplication and Division. Most of the
lessons will be spent on multiplication with a few on division. We started off completing
a mad minutes multiplication sheet. Students had 5 minutes to complete as many
questions as they could. We will be doing something similar to this every day
before we start our lesson.
Today we began going over some key terms and
strategies used to help us solve multiplication problems. Some strategies are repeated addition – 3 x 4 = 3 + 3 + 3 +
3 = 12, using arrays (pictures) -
**** **** **** = 3 x 4 = 12. There are 3 groups with
4 in each group. Skip counting is
another strategy - 5 x 7 = 5, 10, 15 20, 25, 30, 35 OR 2 x 6 = 2, 4, 6, 8, 10,
12. Using a number line or multiplication chart are other useful strategies.
Homework – MMS pg 54-55
-Fill in remaining questions on Speed Multiplication sheet
UOI
Today we began discussing the Islamic religion. We did some readings,
created an anchor chart of what we know, and began filling out some charts on
Islamic symbols.
We got through all but 5 UOI Global Connections presentations. Some very
interesting topics I must say, from a McDonald’s opening near the Vatican to how
religion will look in 2050. The videos and presentations we saw today were
fantastic. I loved how each student had their own way of presenting their article. Excellent
work! We will finish with the remaining 5 tomorrow!
Homework – If you have yet to complete your summary of your news
article, please do so by tomorrow
-UOI Summative begins next week and will be due Friday, January 27. More
information will be sent home later this week. It will consist of students
creating their own religion.
Pictures of todays presentations and video presentations!
Have a lovely night!
