Good afternoon everyone!
I hope you had a great weekend!
It is Kase’s 3rd birthday today, so my mom came down for the weekend
and we had a small family birthday celebration. Tonight is pizza and Dairy Queen
Treatzza Pizza, as per the birthday boy’s request!
Important information and reminders:
It is hard to believe, but the
time is here already – re-registration is upon us! Re-registrations
forms have been sent home. The deadline to re-register is February 9.
After that we open up spaces to the public. Do not delay – reserve your spot
today for grade 5!
International Mindedness Day will be taking place on Friday, January 20 from 2:30-3:15 and parents
are more than welcome to join us. This is an in class project, which we will be
working on from now until January 20th. The country we have chosen
is Japan and students have been placed into groups.
Year Ahead Day will be
taking place on Wednesday, January 25. This allows grade 4 students to
spend a day as a grade 5 student. Students always look forward to this
day!
A note from Mrs. Smith and Mr. Foster - The
Grade Ones will be turning their classrooms into grocery stores for our
Organization unit. The students have been working really hard to stock it full
of healthy snacks and drinks. On Tuesday Jan. 17th we will be opening our
stores to SJA classes to purchase healthy snacks and drinks for $1-2. All
proceeds will be donated to the Sick Kids Hospital. Thank you for your
participation!
The grade 4's will be visiting the grocery store on
Tuesday at 12:00, so please bring in some change to help support the Grade 1's
and Sick Kids Hospital!
Language
Today we continued work on our Japan International Mindedness Day
project. We began conferencing and creating our good copies. A reminder that
all work is to be done in class and all final copies will be due by Thursday, January 19. Monday we will
begin putting together our good copies.
Homework – bring in
Japan artifact if you have something
-Bring in some spending money for Mrs. Smith’s grocery store
Math
Today we focused on using arrays (pictures) to solve equations. We used the
boar, and students to demonstrate!
Some strategies are repeated
addition – 3 x 4 = 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 12, using
arrays (pictures) - **** **** **** = 3 x 4 = 12. There are 3 groups with
4 in each group. Skip counting is
another strategy - 5 x 7 = 5, 10, 15 20, 25, 30, 35 OR 2 x 6 = 2, 4, 6, 8, 10,
12. Using a number line or multiplication chart are other useful
strategies. Remember that 5 x 8 = 40 and so does 8 x 5 = 40, any number x 1
will be that number (10 x 1 = 10) and any number x 0 will always be 0 (9 x 0 =
0).
Homework – MMS pg 58-59
UOI
Today we began our UOI summative – creating our own religion. Students
were given a brainstorming page with topics they would have to include in their
presentation. We will be working on rough copies this week and then next week
we will begin good copies and setting up our display boards for presentations
on Friday, January 27.
Homework – Bring in a
religious artifact
-Our UOI summative will be due Friday,
January 27. ALL WORK IS TO BE COMPLETED IN CLASS. Students will have to
create their own religion from scratch. They will be given a template to brainstorm
ideas and then form a display board with all the information. The first week
will mostly be spent on rough copies with final copies and display board set up
the following week. Students will need to bring in their own display board.
Have a lovely night!
Mrs. Hocevar J
