Good afternoon everyone!

I hope you had a great night! Here are some pictures from Kase’s 3rd birthday!

Important information and reminders:

It is hard to believe, but the time is here already – re-registration is upon us! Re-registrations forms have been sent home. The deadline to re-register is February 9. After that we open up spaces to the public. Do not delay – reserve your spot today for grade 5!

International Mindedness Day will be taking place on Friday, January 20 from 2:30-3:15 and parents are more than welcome to join us. This is an in class project, which we will be working on from now until January 20th. The country we have chosen is Japan and students have been placed into groups. Kiss n’ ride will be cancelled this day!

Year Ahead Day - SJA is excited to announce that Year Ahead Day is happening again this year! All SJA PYP students will be participating in this exciting event on Wednesday, January 25th.  Year Ahead Day is a fun and interactive day for the students at SJA to spend a day in the class of the grade level ahead of them (example: SK students spend their day as Grade 1 students, Grade 6 students spend their day as Grade 7 students, etc.). This is a great way for the students at SJA to get a glimpse into their future life at SJA! Students can get to know the teachers, see their future classroom, and take part in activities they will be participating in next year. Please know that the teacher that is assigned for your child does not mean this will be your child's classroom teacher next year.

News about our lunch program - SJA is excited to announce that our lunch ordering system has now been upgraded!

Beginning today you will place all lunch orders on-line. The ordering system is more simplified and easy to navigate.

Below are the instructions on how to order and how to pay:

2.     Click on the link. Don't have an account? Register and register your child based on your email address, their grade, and classroom teacher name. (You can register more than one child)

3.     Verify your email account through the email sent

4.     Log-in and look for the tab manage lunch on the top left of the page

5.     Select add new lunch form

6.     Select student name and payment method

7.     Check off the boxes for your selections for each day

8.     Press save

9.     The program will then take you to a screen that will give you the total you owe for the month

10.  Please place amount owing (in agenda) in a zip lock bag clearly labelled with student first and last name as well as teacher name.

We recognize the process is new and may be confusing so we appreciate your understanding in this matter. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the ordering process, please do not hesitate to contact Ms. Smith at bsmith@stjudesacademy.com to set up an appointment time to assist you in the ordering process.

******Please place all orders by January 27Th 2017. Please keep in mind that after this date no orders can be accepted as the site will close until the new month. We will send reminders and blog posts to ensure you do not miss the deadline. ******

Thank you to those students who brought in money to support Mrs. Smith, Mr. Foster, and Sick Kids Hospital. We enjoyed visiting your grocery store and send you congratulations on a job well done! Way to go grade 1!

Language

Today we continued work on our Japan International Mindedness Day project. We began conferencing and creating our good copies. A reminder that all work is to be done in class and all final copies will be due by Thursday, January 19. We will begin board set up then!

Homework – bring in Japan artifact if you have something

Math

Today we began again by filling in a multiplication chart. Students were given 5 minutes to complete as many as they could.

Our lesson today focused on estimating products. Remember that an estimate is a reasonable guess. We can use rounding to help us do that. For example, if we have 7 x 64 we can round 64 to 60. Then we would have 7 x 60 = 420. Patterning also helps. If we know 1 x 10 = 10, we know that 1 x 100 = 100 & 1 x 1000 = 1000. We are adding a 0 each time!

Some strategies are repeated addition – 3 x 4 = 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 12, using arrays (pictures) - ****  ****    **** = 3 x 4 = 12. There are 3 groups with 4 in each group. Skip counting is another strategy - 5 x 7 = 5, 10, 15 20, 25, 30, 35 OR 2 x 6 = 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12. Using a number line or multiplication chart are other useful strategies. Remember that 5 x 8 = 40 and so does 8 x 5 = 40, any number x 1 will be that number (10 x 1 = 10) and any number x 0 will always be 0 (9 x 0 = 0).

Homework – MMS pg 60-63

Drawing arrays (pictures) to help solve the equations!

Student arrays! 2 x 3 = 6

More student arrays! 1 x 11 = 11 (I couldn't fit them all into one picture!!)

 UOI

Today we continued our UOI summative – creating our own religion. Students were given a brainstorming page with topics they would have to include in their presentation. We will be working on rough copies this week and then next week we will begin good copies and setting up our display boards for presentations on Friday, January 27.

Homework – Bring in a religious artifact

-Our UOI summative will be due Friday, January 27. ALL WORK IS TO BE COMPLETED IN CLASS. Students will have to create their own religion from scratch. They will be given a template to brainstorm ideas and then form a display board with all the information. The first week will mostly be spent on rough copies with final copies and display board set up the following week. Students will need to bring in their own display board.

Thank you to my 'Action Stars' for bringing in their religious artifacts!

Have a lovely night!
