Good afternoon everyone!

I hope you had a great night!

Important information and reminders:

It is hard to believe, but the time is here already – re-registration is upon us! Re-registrations forms have been sent home. The deadline to re-register is February 9. After that we open up spaces to the public. Do not delay – reserve your spot today for grade 5!

International Mindedness Day will be taking place on Friday, January 20 from 2:30-3:15 and parents are more than welcome to join us. This is an in class project, which we will be working on from now until January 20th. The country we have chosen is Japan and students have been placed into groups.

Year Ahead Day will be taking place on Wednesday, January 25. This allows grade 4 students to spend a day as a grade 5 student. Students always look forward to this day!

A note from Mrs. Smith and Mr. Foster - The Grade Ones will be turning their classrooms into grocery stores for our Organization unit. The students have been working really hard to stock it full of healthy snacks and drinks. On Tuesday Jan. 17th we will be opening our stores to SJA classes to purchase healthy snacks and drinks for $1-2. All proceeds will be donated to the Sick Kids Hospital. Thank you for your participation!

The grade 4's will be visiting the grocery store on Tuesday at 12:00, so please bring in some change to help support the Grade 1's and Sick Kids Hospital!

Today we continued work on our Japan International Mindedness Day project. We used the research we collected over the holidays and began the rough copies. A reminder that all work is to be done in class and all final copies will be due by Thursday, January 19. Monday we will begin putting together our good copies. If anyone has artifacts from Japan, please send them in!

We also read with our reading buddies and made a trip to the library!

Homework – Find out what the word ‘deity’ means

-Bring in device on Monday

Working on our Japan International Mindedness Day project yesterday and today!

Math

Today we started off by completing the same multiplication chart we did yesterday. Students had 5 minutes to fill in as many as they could. We will be doing something similar to this every day before we start our lesson.

Today we played some multiplication games.

Some strategies are repeated addition – 3 x 4 = 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 12, using arrays (pictures) - ****  ****    **** = 3 x 4 = 12. There are 3 groups with 4 in each group. Skip counting is another strategy - 5 x 7 = 5, 10, 15 20, 25, 30, 35 OR 2 x 6 = 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12. Using a number line or multiplication chart are other useful strategies. Remember that 5 x 8 = 40 and so does 8 x 5 = 40, any number x 1 will be that number (10 x 1 = 10) and any number x 0 will always be 0 (9 x 0 = 0).

Homework – Complete multiplication chart

Some strategies!

 UOI

Today we worked in our table groups to complete Venn diagrams. Each table chose two religions that we studied and compared the two. If anyone has any religious symbols they would like to share, please bring them in on Monday!

Homework – Sign and return UOI summative information sheet/rubric. Our UOI summative begins next week and will be due Friday, January 27. ALL WORK IS TO BE COMPLETED IN CLASS. Students will have to create their own religion from scratch. They will be given a template to brainstorm ideas and then form a display board with all the information. The first week will mostly be spent on rough copies with final copies and display board set up the following week. Students will need to bring in their own display board.

Working on our Venn diagrams!

They are complete!

 Have a lovely weekend!

Math

Today we started off by completing multiplication chart. Students had 5 minutes to fill in as many as they could. We will be doing something similar to this every day before we start our lesson.

Today we looked at multiplying numbers 0-9. We took a closer look at a multiplication chart and found out how to use it. We found out that 5 x 8 = 40 and so does 8 x 5 = 40. We also realized that any number x 1 will be that number (10 x 1 = 10) and any number x 0 will always be 0 (9 x 0 = 0).

Some strategies are repeated addition – 3 x 4 = 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 12, using arrays (pictures) - ****  ****    **** = 3 x 4 = 12. There are 3 groups with 4 in each group. Homework – MMS pg 56-57

-Complete multiplication chart

UOI

Today we continued looking at Islamic religion. We began to fill in a festivals chart. Tomorrow we will complete a Venn Diagram to compare the religions we have discussed! We also finished up our UOI Global Connections presentations. Once again they were very well done. Excellent job grade 4s! Information on the summative assessment will be sent home tomorrow.

Homework - Finish Islamic festivals sheet

-UOI Summative begins next week and will be due Friday, January 27. More information will be sent home later this week. It will consist of students creating their own religion.

Have a lovely night!

Good afternoon everyone!

Happy New Year! I hope everyone enjoyed their holiday break. My family most certainly did, even though we dealt with fevers, two rounds of the croup, and bacterial infections!! We stayed in Georgetown for Christmas with my family, then made our way up north to spend some time with Mark’s family. We spent New Year’s Eve with some very close and long time friends and then took it easy the last week!

Christmas Eve!

Tobogganing on Christmas Day!

Beginning our Japan rough copies!

Math

Today we began our unit on Multiplication and Division. Most of the lessons will be spent on multiplication with a few on division. We started off completing a mad minutes multiplication sheet. Students had 5 minutes to complete as many questions as they could. We will be doing something similar to this every day before we start our lesson.

Today we began going over some key terms and strategies used to help us solve multiplication problems.

Homework – MMS pg 54-55

-Fill in remaining questions on Speed Multiplication sheet

UOI

Today we began discussing the Islamic religion. We did some readings, created an anchor chart of what we know, and began filling out some charts on Islamic symbols.

We got through all but 5 UOI Global Connections presentations. Some very interesting topics I must say, from a McDonald’s opening near the Vatican to how religion will look in 2050. The videos and presentations we saw today were fantastic. I loved how each student had their own way of presenting their article. Excellent work! We will finish with the remaining 5 tomorrow!

Homework – If you have yet to complete your summary of your news article, please do so by tomorrow

-UOI Summative begins next week and will be due Friday, January 27. More information will be sent home later this week. It will consist of students creating their own religion.
