Language
Today we used our language period to work on our math games. As part of
the requirements, students were asked to write out the instructions and any
important information.
Homework – Read for at
least 30 minutes
-Find/buy 'Frindle' book for Tuesday, April 18
-Last page of report card parent comments due by Friday, April 7
Math
Today we continued to work on their math pattern game.
Patterns:
The first was a same-step growing pattern, which increases by the same
number each time. For example, if frame 1 has 1 square, frame 2 has 2 squares,
frame 3 has 3 squares, then the pattern rule if start at 1 and add 1 each time.
The second type is called a changing-step growing pattern, which increase by a
different number each time. For example, if frame 1 has 1 square, frame 2 has 4
squares, frame 3 has 9 squares, frame 4 has 16 squares, and then the pattern
rule is start at 1 and add 3. Then add each time (1, 3, 5, 7, etc).
A growing pattern grows by a certain number each time. For example if
frame 1 has 1 square, frame 2 has 3 squares, frame 3 has 5 squares, then frame
4 has to have 7 squares. It is adding 2 squares each time. Using charts are a
great way to help us!
Just a few reminders from our last multiplication unit!
Some multiplication strategies are repeated
addition – 3 x 4 = 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 12, using arrays (pictures) -
**** **** **** = 3 x 4 = 12. There are 3 groups with 4
in each group. Skip counting is another strategy - 5 x 7 = 5, 10, 15 20,
25, 30, 35 OR 2 x 6 = 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12. Using a number line or multiplication
chart are other useful strategies. Remember that 5 x 8 = 40 and so does 8 x
5 = 40, any number x 1 will be that number (10 x 1 = 10) and any number x 0
will always be 0 (9 x 0 = 0).
Homework – Math test
will take place on Thursday, April 6 – review was sent home today.
The beginning of our math games!
UOI
Today we began discussing the second 2 types – erosion and deposition. We
began by watching a video and then we did an experiment. We realized that erosion is the moving of sediment from one place to another by means of ice, wind, and water. Deposition is when particles are carried by ice, water, and wind and are dropped (deposited) in another place. Our experiment consisted of containers of sand, ice cubes, water, and wind, which was cause by us blowing on the sand. We found out that wind erodes the sand/rocks because when we blew at it, the sand moved. Wind was deposited to the other side of the container. We also found out that water erodes the sand/rocks because the water causes the sand to have grooves and to move, where water deposits the sand to another part of the container.
Homework – Rock and
Minerals field trip form and money due by Friday, April 7.
-Bring in pebbles in a bag with your name on it for Thursday.
Examples of some pebbles...they need to be tiny!
Have a wonderful night! Stay dry!
