Good afternoon everyone!

I hope you all had a wonderful day. Tomorrow is a Day 2 and our Terry Fox Run, therefore our actually gym class is cancelled since we will be running later in the day. Don’t forget about those pledges!! We are encouraging all students to bring in a ‘Toonie for Terry’ and are asking that students come to school dressed in their SJA gym pants/shorts along with their house coloured gym shirt. If students do not own a house t-shirt, they may wear their regular gym shirt.

Unit of Inquiry

Today we joined Ms. Cass’s Grade 5 class for our UOI period, where we conducted two experiments - one with vinegar, baking soda, and a balloon and another with a jar and whipping cream. Ask me what happened!! Then we came back to class and completed a fill-in-the-blank worksheet.

All set!

Ask me what happened when the baking soda went into the vinegar.

Experiment #2 - we made butter!! Ask me how!

Writing down our experiment, hypothesis, and observations!

Homework

Inquiry into Mathematics

Today we compared and ordered numbers. Place value charts are a great tool to help us solve these problems.  We began with a quick lesson/review and then worked in partners to order a given set of numbers.

Points to Remember

Multiplication and division strategies - For example, for multiplication 100 x 10 = 1,000 (we multiply 1 x 1 to get 1 and then add 3 zeros – 2 in 100 and 1 in 10 = 1,000) and for division 1,000,000/100,000 = 10 (1/1 = 1 and then we took away 5 zeros from 100,000 and 5 zeros from 1,000,000 which left us with 10).

Standard form is 3,961. Expanded form would be 3,000 + 900 + 60 + 1 and number-word form would be 3 thousand, 961. We also realized that when using a place value chart, each group of three place values is called a period. With in each period the digits of a number are read as hundred, tens, and ones.

Place value chart:

Millions Period
Thousands Period
Units Period

H M
T M
M
H T
T T
T
H
T
O

H M – hundred million
T M – ten million
M – million

H T – hundred thousand
T T – ten thousand
T – thousand

H – hundreds
T – tens
O – ones

Inquiry into Language

Today we discussed our chapter 1 comprehension questions and began our chapter 2 questions. We also went over the expectations when completing these questions. I am looking for full sentences that begin with a capital letter and end with either a period, exclamation point, or question mark. I reminded them to use the book to help with spelling and to be sure to answer each question completely, with support from the book.

Complete PJ chapter 2 questions
Spelling test #1 tomorrow

Have a wonderful night!
