Unit of Inquiry
Today
we reviewed what matter was and the three states and learned about physical and
chemical properties. Physical properties are characteristics of a substance
that can be observed or measured without changing the substance into something else.
Chemical properties are characteristics of a substance related to changing a
substance into something else. We also defined mass, weight, volume, and density –
ask me what they are! Finally, we solved some 'Moon Math' problems!

Inquiry into Mathematics
Today
we examined multiples and common multiples.
Multiples can be found by
starting at the number and counting on by that number. For example, multiples
of 4 are 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28, 32, 36, etc. Multiples of 6 are 6, 12, 18,
24, 30, 36, etc.
A
common multiple is a number that is
a multiple of each of two or more given numbers. For example, common multiples
of 4 and 6 are 12, 24, and 36 as those numbers appear in the multiples list (4
and 6). Each common multiple of 4 and 6 is divisible by 4 and 6.
Points to Remember
Multiplication
and division strategies - For example, for multiplication 100 x 10 = 1,000 (we
multiply 1 x 1 to get 1 and then add 3 zeros – 2 in 100 and 1 in 10 = 1,000)
and for division 1,000,000/100,000 = 10 (1/1 = 1 and then we took away 5 zeros
from 100,000 and 5 zeros from 1,000,000 which left us with 10).
Standard form is 3,961. Expanded form would be 3,000 + 900 +
60 + 1 and number-word form would be
3 thousand, 961. We also realized that when using a place value chart, each
group of three place values is called a period.
With in each period the digits of a number are read as hundred, tens, and ones.

Inquiry into Language
Today
we read chapter 3, began the chapter 3 questions, and some students began reading
chapter 4. We also wrote our first spelling test of the year.
Please
remember that comprehension questions are to be in full sentences that begin
with a capital letter and end with either a period, exclamation point, or
question mark. Please use the book to help with spelling and to be sure to
answer each question completely, with support from the book. I have sat down with each student and outlined my expectations moving forward.
Homework
Complete
PJ chapter 3 questions and read chapter 4
Sign
and return spelling test #1 – wrong words are to be written out 5 times
Have a
wonderful weekend!
