Good afternoon everyone!

Happy New Year! I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas break! We most certainly did! We headed up north for a couple of days to do Christmas with Mark’s family. It was absolutely gorgeous up there…we made a rink on Lake Nosbonsing to play hockey on, had a bonfire and went snow sledding! My parents and sister joined us for Christmas in Georgetown. On Christmas Eve we played hockey, tracked Santa on the Santa Tracker, played Christmas Charades and went carolling. Christmas day saw many gifts open, road hockey, Christmas movies and music. For New Years, we got together with some friends and celebrated the New Year!

Charlie's last day with us...oh the tears from this one!

Reading Home Alone 2 together!

We must have been good this year!

He came...he came!!

Meet Kyle!

Tomorrow is a Day 3 and music. House tie day on Friday! After care invoices have been sent out and all payments are due Wednesday, January 15. Scholastic orders are due January 17. Please note I will be out of the classroom next Tuesday to Thursday, as I am doing a health and safety course.

Caribou Math Contest
The next Caribou contest will be taking place Wednesday, January 15. Arrive at 7:15 am for a 7:30 am start. Bring your own charged device. The interactive question will be FRUIT SALAD, which you can practice now on Caribou’s games page. This is a new game. Students, please test it and let Caribou know of any problems. There is no history question in the January contest.

Our next extra-curricular activity is skiing/snowboarding at Glen Eden Ski Resort. The dates of the trip are January 22, February 19 and March 4. Please do not order lunch for these days; it will not be saved nor will a reimbursement be given. We will be leaving at 7:00 AM and returning by 4:00 PM at the latest. All rentals are included, however students are more than welcome to bring their own. Please do not order hot lunch for these days as we will be eating lunch at the ski hill – students are welcome to bring money to purchase food and drink items. Students must ensure they are dressed in appropriate ski gear; warm socks, long johns with comfy clothes, snow pants, warm mitts, a face protector and a ski jacket. Please note that if students chose skiing, they will ski all three times. If students pick snowboarding, they will snowboard all three times. All students will have to pass each level before they are granted permission to ski on the big hill, no matter what their experience.

Unit of Inquiry

Today we began learning about the respiratory system. We labelled a diagram of the respiratory system, used a word box to complete a fill-in-the-blanks sheet about how the respiratory system works and completed a respiratory word scramble.

Next week we will begin our summative, which will take us until Thursday, January 30, when presentations will take place. This summative will consist of groups, which I will put together, researching and preparing a presentation about a human body system that we did not cover in class. Students will be using their summative package, which we hope to have by Monday, to assist them in completing the summative. Students will be responsible for including a diagram of the system, what organs are part of that system, how the system works, what that system is responsible for, how that system is connected to others in the body, and how to keep that system healthy.

Inquiry into Mathematics

Today we wrote our pre-assessment for our Data Management unit. Tomorrow we will be learning about interpreting data.

Data Management is a short unit. Our test for this unit will consist of students creating a survey question, surveying a certain number of students, creating 3 separate graphs and inferring information from their graphs. This will roughly take 3 days to complete. As of now, it will begin Friday, January 17. Our next math unit is also a short one, Patterns in Numbers and Geometry, and will take us until the first week of February.

Inquiry into Language

Today we began writing our speeches. We began by watching a video on a persuasive speech (see link below) and then together as a class we picked a topic, school uniforms, created our argument, against, and chose three reasons why we are against school uniforms, they take too long to put on, they cost too much money and students can’t express themselves through the uniforms. Next, we wrote our first paragraph, which explained our first reason; it takes too long to put on. Students the began writing their own first paragraph. Tomorrow we will focus on paragraph two. All topics have been approved.

When we are back from the break we will begin by writing our three body paragraphs; one a day using teacher guided writing. We will then write our introduction and conclusion.
