A note regarding re-registration
Dear SJA Families,
Just a reminder that the SJA re-registration process is underway.
To reserve your child’s 2020-2021 place at St. Jude’s Academy, complete and
return your child’s re-registration forms and payment to Reception by Tuesday, February 18, 2020 at 4:00
pm.
After this date and time, any available grade-level spaces will be
open to new families on waitlists.
In addition, the deadline for our priority enrolment into our
JK Program is Friday, January
17, 2020, a letter is attached with more information.

A note regarding our Town Hall/Social
Dear SJA Community,
We look forward to seeing you at the SJA
Town Hall/Social on January 24 from 7 to 9 pm. All parent/guardians of JK
to Grade 12 students are invited to hear about our exciting school year, survey
result and future direction. To help us plan for this event, RSVP by January 17
to reception@stjudesacademy.com . We look forward to seeing you there!
Our next extra-curricular
activity is skiing/snowboarding at Glen
Eden Ski Resort. The dates of the trip are January 22, February 19 and March 4. Please do not order lunch for
these days; it will not be saved nor will a reimbursement be given. We will be
leaving at 7:00 AM and returning by 4:00 PM at the latest. All rentals are
included, however students are more than welcome to bring their own. Please do
not order hot lunch for these days as we will be eating lunch at the ski hill –
students are welcome to bring money to purchase food and drink items. Students
must ensure they are dressed in appropriate ski gear; warm socks, long johns
with comfy clothes, snow pants, warm mitts, a face protector (if possible) and
a ski jacket. Please note that if students chose skiing, they will ski all
three times. If students pick snowboarding, they will snowboard all three
times. All students will have to pass each level before they are granted
permission to ski on the big hill, no matter what their experience.
March Break Camps
Forms have been sent home
regarding SJA’s awesome Adventure Camp. The wonderful camp will run from Monday
to Friday both weeks of the March Break (March 9-13 & March 16-20) and is
offered to student from JK to Grade 6. Field trips will take place on Thursday
afternoons. Meal plans are also included if you chose to do so. Cash or
QuickBooks payments only please. Don’t delay; register today!

Unit of Inquiry
Today
we continued our summative, which will take us until Thursday, January 30, when
presentations will take place. This summative will consist of groups, which I have
put together, researching and preparing a presentation about a human body
system that we did not cover in class. Students will be using their summative
package to assist them in completing the summative. Students will be
responsible for including a
diagram of the system, what organs are part of that system, how the system
works, what that system is responsible for, how that system is connected to
others in the body, and how to keep that system healthy.
Next Friday, we will be splitting up the boys and girls as we will be discussing both male and female reproductive parts and puberty. Ms. Cass and myself will be talking to the girls and Mr. Orr will be talking to the boys. A letter was sent home tonight informing you of this talk. Please note we not be discussing how babies are made. Last year we did get asked the question of how it happens, but we will let you have that conversation with your child. Our conversation last year brought up some questions and good conversations that parents had with their child, so please expect it!

Mathematics
Today we examined Euler’s
Formula! To begin all the student had to inquire about this formula. They were
given bits of information and were asked to see if they could figure out the
formula. Euler's Formula is the number of faces + the number of vertices - 2 = the number of edges (F + V - 2 = E).
The Data Management tests were sent home. I was hoping for better results overall. Many silly errors, such as not including titles and labels or mixing up x and y axis.
Our Patterns in Numbers and Geometry Unit will take us until the first week
of February.
Points to Remember
Representing patterns; using a model, making
a table, or drawing a graph. Remember that a pattern rules states the
following; start at 5. Add 1 each time.
Remember that the
pattern rule must work for all input numbers. All graphs must have a title, an
x (Input numbers) and y axis (Output numbers) label and an appropriate scale.

Today
we wrote our spelling/sentence test for lesson #17 and continued with our speeches. We are now working on our good
copies, which may be typed. We will also begin memorizing for those who are
finished with the writing process. Final speeches should be ready to go on
Monday, as everyone will begin to memorize and time themselves to ensure they
are falling between the 3 to 5 minute mark.

A note on speeches
Speeches
are a 4-5 week process. A package was sent home, as students needed to complete
some work at home over the holidays. Grade 5 students will be expected to write
and memorize a 3-5 minute persuasive speech on a topic of their choice;
research will be needed, along with proper citation. When we are back from the
break we will begin by writing our three body paragraphs; one a day using
teacher guided writing. We will then write our introduction and conclusion.
Time will be given edit, re-write and memorize in class. Please see below an
outline of dates that we must stick to (as found in the speech package)!

This week the students learned about the parts of the body. They began with the outer parts and the description of each part. They also learned about the internal organs of the digestive system. Students were given a diagram with the body with missing parts and students drew the missing parts. The digestive system will be continued next week.
The Grade 5s will be attending a French theatrical presentation ‘Les Insectes Sur Scene’ on Tuesday, March 31st from 9:30 to 11:30 AM.
