Good afternoon everyone!
I hope you had a great weekend. Carter tried out being goalie at Sunday's practice and very quickly realized it was not for him! This morning during announcements, we had the luxury of watching the Grade 2 classes perform the Chinese New Year Dragon Dance. Great job Grade 2s!
Tomorrow is a Day 4 and gym. Please
ensure students are dressed in their gym uniform ready to board the bus with
proper gym shoes at 9:00 AM. Students
will change into their school day uniform after gym. Thank you to all of the
parents who were able to join the Town Hall Social on Friday. Bake sale is on
Tuesday and Wednesday and casual day is on Thursday for those who have paid the
casual day fee. House ties on Friday please!!
Please have a small chat
with your child regarding proper hygiene with regards to coughing/sneezing and
hand washing! Please know we are taking all precautions necessary at the school
and in the classroom.

Our next extra-curricular
activity is skiing/snowboarding at Glen
Eden Ski Resort. The dates of the trip are January 22, February 19 and March 4. Please do not order lunch for
these days; it will not be saved nor will a reimbursement be given. We will be
leaving at 7:00 AM and returning by 4:00 PM at the latest. All rentals are
included, however students are more than welcome to bring their own. Please do
not order hot lunch for these days as we will be eating lunch at the ski hill –
students are welcome to bring money to purchase food and drink items. Students
must ensure they are dressed in appropriate ski gear; warm socks, long johns
with comfy clothes, snow pants, warm mitts, a face protector (if possible) and
a ski jacket. Please note that if students chose skiing, they will ski all
three times. If students pick snowboarding, they will snowboard all three
times. All students will have to pass each level before they are granted
permission to ski on the big hill, no matter what their experience.

Unit of Inquiry
Today
we continued our summative, which will take us until Thursday, January 30, when
presentations will take place. This summative will consist of groups, which I have
put together, researching and preparing a presentation about a human body
system that we did not cover in class. Students will be using their summative
package to assist them in completing the summative. Students will be
responsible for including a
diagram of the system, what organs are part of that system, how the system
works, what that system is responsible for, how that system is connected to
others in the body, and how to keep that system healthy.
On Friday, we will
be having our reproductive talk. We will be discussion puberty and proper
terminology. Ms. Cass and myself will be talking with the girls and Mr. Orr
will be taking the boys. Our talk will
run from 9:00 AM to just before 10:00. Please expect some questions over the
weekend!

Inquiry into
Mathematics
Today we examined
relating distance, average speed and time. We used the following formula's to
help us with this. Distance = average
speed x time. Time = is distance/speed.
Speed = distance/time. Tomorrow we
will have the students complete an activity to demonstrate their knowledge.
Our Patterns in Numbers and Geometry Unit will take us until the first week
of February. Math test will take place on Tuesday, February 4.
Points to Remember
Representing patterns; using a model, making
a table, or drawing a graph. Remember that a pattern rules states the
following; start at 5. Add 1 each time.
Remember that the
pattern rule must work for all input numbers. All graphs must have a title, an
x (Input numbers) and y axis (Output numbers) label and an appropriate scale.
Euler's Formula is the number of faces
+ the number of vertices - 2 = the number of edges (F + V - 2 = E).

Inquiry into Language
Today
we read with our reading buddies and began to memorize and time the speeches to
ensure they are falling between the 3 to 5 minute mark. We did this in pairs
and gave our partners 2 stars and a wish (2 things that were done good and an
area for improvement). I also continued to edit speeches. On Wednesday we will
begin a speech rotation of all students who will read their speech out loud to
the class one by one. We will do this on Thursday and Friday with the hopes of
everyone being able to read through their speech twice. On Monday, February 3,
the top 6 will be chosen; 3 from our class and 3 from Ms. Cass’s class. In
order to have a chance to move forward, the speech must be 100% memorized, fall
within the 2-3 minute mark and be persuasive. Students should also use expression
and some gestures when presenting their speech to help enhance it and speak to their
audience.

will begin by writing our three body paragraphs; one a day using teacher guided
writing. We will then write our introduction and conclusion. Time will be given
edit, re-write and memorize in class. Please see below an outline of dates that

French – Mme. Sarah
This week the students learned about the parts of the body. They began
with the outer parts and the description of each part. They also learned about
the internal organs of the digestive system. Students were given a diagram with
the body with missing parts and students drew the missing parts. The digestive
system will be continued next week.
The
Grade 5s will be attending a French theatrical presentation ‘Les Insectes Sur Scene’ on Tuesday, March
31st from 9:30 to 11:30 AM.
