Good afternoon everyone!
I hope you had a great day! Tomorrow is a Day 2, gym and casual day
for Kappa students. Please ensure Theta and Zeta students are dressed in their
gym uniform ready to board the bus with proper gym shoes at 9:00 AM. Those students will change into their school day
uniform after gym. Please note I will be out of the classroom tomorrow as I am
doing a health and safety course. After
care invoices have been sent out and all payments are due today, Wednesday,
January 15. Kappa students have
earned a casual day tomorrow, for bringing in the most clothes during the upper
school clothes drive. Scholastic orders
are due Friday, January 17. House tie day on Friday.

A note regarding our Town Hall/Social
Dear SJA Community,
We look forward to seeing you at the SJA
Town Hall/Social on January 24 from 7 to 9 pm. All parent/guardians of JK
to Grade 12 students are invited to hear about our exciting school year, survey
result and future direction. To help us plan for this event, RSVP by January 17
to reception@stjudesacademy.com . We look forward to seeing you there!
Our next extra-curricular
activity is skiing/snowboarding at Glen
Eden Ski Resort. The dates of the trip are January 22, February 19 and March 4. Please do not order lunch for
these days; it will not be saved nor will a reimbursement be given. We will be
leaving at 7:00 AM and returning by 4:00 PM at the latest. All rentals are
included, however students are more than welcome to bring their own. Please do
not order hot lunch for these days as we will be eating lunch at the ski hill –
students are welcome to bring money to purchase food and drink items. Students
must ensure they are dressed in appropriate ski gear; warm socks, long johns
with comfy clothes, snow pants, warm mitts, a face protector and a ski jacket.
Please note that if students chose skiing, they will ski all three times. If
students pick snowboarding, they will snowboard all three times. All students
will have to pass each level before they are granted permission to ski on the
big hill, no matter what their experience.

Unit of Inquiry
Today
we continued our summative, which will take us until Thursday, January 30, when
presentations will take place. This summative will consist of groups, which I have
put together, researching and preparing a presentation about a human body
system that we did not cover in class. Students will be using their summative
package to assist them in completing the summative. Students will be
responsible for including a
diagram of the system, what organs are part of that system, how the system
works, what that system is responsible for, how that system is connected to
others in the body, and how to keep that system healthy.
Summative Groups
Group 1 - Urinary System
Jai, Zak, Bosco,
Amber and Alyssa
Group 2 – Digestive System
Joshua, Hayden,
Maya, Sachi, Aidan and Eric
Group 3 – Renal System
Jordan, Zain,
Sanjana and Kareena
Group 4 – Endocrine System

Inquiry into
Mathematics
Today we began looking
at graphing on a coordinate grid, which is called a Cartesian plane. We use an ordered
pair to describe the coordinates of a point, for example the ordered pair
(6, 2). We use this ordered pair to plot or locate a point on a grid. The first number in the ordered pair, 6, is
represented on the horizontal axis (the x axis) and tells the horizontal
distance from the origin, while the second
number in the ordered pair, 2, is represented on the vertical axis (the y
axis) and tells the vertical distance from the origin on a grid. The origin is the point where the
horizontal and vertical axes meet.
Data
Management is a short unit. Our test for this unit will consist of students
creating a survey question, surveying a certain number of students, creating
three separate graphs and inferring information from their graphs. They will
also be finding the mean, mode and median, as well as drawing a scatter plot
and finding coordinates. This will roughly take 3 days to complete. As of now,
it will begin Friday, January 17 and continue until Tuesday, January 21. Please
note no review will be completed for this unit. Our next math unit is also a
short one, Patterns in Numbers and
Geometry, and will take us until the first week of February.
Points to Remember
Interpreting Data
From the graph below I
can infer that most students preferred soccer as their favourite sport, other
was the least chosen option, basketball was picked by 6 students and that
softball was chosen by one more student than other.
To find the mean, you add up the total number of
all the data and then divide by how many numbers are in that set of data.
8, 8, 8, 8, 9, 9, 9,
11, 12, 20 are the number in the set of data.
1) Add up
all of the numbers = 102
2) Divide
by 10 (as there are 10 numbers in the set of data) = 102/10 = 10.2
The median is the middle number when the
data is arranged in order. When there is an odd number of data, the median is
the middle number. When there is an even number of data, the median is the mean
of the two numbers.
95, 92, 87, 85, 80, 78,
76, 73, 70, 66, 54 are the numbers in a set of data. The median of this set is
78 because there are a odd number of data. There are 5 numbers before 78 and 5
numbers after 78.
95, 92, 87, 85, 80, 78,
76, 73, 72, 70, 66, 54 are the numbers in a set of data. Because there is an
even number of data, we have to find the mean to find the median. The middle
numbers are 75 and 76, therefore 78 + 76/2 = 77 and that is the median.
The mode is the number that occurs most
frequently in a given set of data.
Different
types of graphs; bar graph, pictograph, line graph, circle graph
and lastly, scatter plots.

we continued writing our speeches. Today we wrote our conclusion. Tomorrow we
will begin writing our first rough copy. This is due Friday, as we will be peer
editing it.

A note on speeches
Speeches
are a 4-5 week process. A package was sent home, as students needed to complete
some work at home over the holidays. Grade 5 students will be expected to write
and memorize a 3-5 minute persuasive speech on a topic of their choice;
research will be needed, along with proper citation. When we are back from the
break we will begin by writing our three body paragraphs; one a day using
teacher guided writing. We will then write our introduction and conclusion.
Time will be given edit, re-write and memorize in class. Please see below an
outline of dates that we must stick to (as found in the speech package)!
