I hope you had a great day! Monday is a Day 5 and music. Students will need their devices on Monday. Please
note I will be out of the classroom Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, as I am doing a health
and safety course. After care invoices have been sent out and all payments are
due Wednesday, January 15. Scholastic orders are due Friday, January 17. Lots of homework this weekend so please read the blog carefully. I have sent a message through Bloomz about some homework for moms and dads!
Caribou Math Contest
The
next Caribou contest will be taking place Wednesday, January 15. Arrive at 7:15
am for a 7:30 am start. Bring your own charged device. The interactive question will be FRUIT
SALAD, which you can practice now on Caribou’s games page. This is a new game.
Students, please test it and let Caribou know of any problems. There is no
history question in the January contest.

note from Ms. Gandy regarding February Hot Lunch
The lunch site is
now open. It will close on Wednesday, January 22 at 3:00 PM sharp. All
payments are to be made through Quickbooks by Thursday, February 6.
Special of the month: Chicken Stir Fry,
which is available every Friday.
Our next extra-curricular
activity is skiing/snowboarding at Glen
Eden Ski Resort. The dates of the trip are January 22, February 19 and March 4. Please do not order lunch for
these days; it will not be saved nor will a reimbursement be given. We will be
leaving at 7:00 AM and returning by 4:00 PM at the latest. All rentals are
included, however students are more than welcome to bring their own. Please do
not order hot lunch for these days as we will be eating lunch at the ski hill –
students are welcome to bring money to purchase food and drink items. Students
must ensure they are dressed in appropriate ski gear; warm socks, long johns
with comfy clothes, snow pants, warm mitts, a face protector and a ski jacket.
Please note that if students chose skiing, they will ski all three times. If
students pick snowboarding, they will snowboard all three times. All students
will have to pass each level before they are granted permission to ski on the
big hill, no matter what their experience.
A note regarding re-registration
Dear SJA Families,
We hope everyone will have a wonderful holiday break! Our Junior
Kindergarten (JK) Registration season is fast approaching and we wanted to
reach out to all of our families and friends to ensure that you are offered
priority enrolment in our JK Program for the 2020-2021 academic
year. Please let us know if you are interested in enrolling your child in
our JK Program by Friday, January 10, 2020 at 4:00
pm. After this date and time, the spots will open up to new families
on the wait lists.

Unit of Inquiry
Today
students wrote a pop quiz on the heart and the circulatory system. Once
students completed their pop quiz they began working on a how to keep your body healthy poster. The poster
should include a variety of different colours to catch your audiences
attention, using different shades. It should include pictures and key phrases. Please ensure your poster has appropriate proportion and scale. All posters are
due on Monday.
Next
week we will begin our summative, which will take us until Thursday, January
30, when presentations will take place. This summative will consist of groups,
which I will put together, researching and preparing a presentation about a
human body system that we did not cover in class. Students will be using their
summative package, which we hope to have by Monday, to assist them in
completing the summative. Students will be responsible for including a diagram of the system, what organs are
part of that system, how the system works, what that system is responsible for,
how that system is connected to others in the body, and how to keep that system
healthy.

Today we looked at how
to find the median, mode and mean in a set of data.
To find the mean, you add up the total number of
all the data and then divide by how many numbers are in that set of data.

11, 12, 20 are the number in the set of data.
1) Add up
all of the numbers = 102
2) Divide
by 10 (as there are 10 numbers in the set of data) = 102/10 = 10.2
The median is the middle number when the
data is arranged in order. When there is an odd number of data, the median is
the middle number. When there is an even number of data, the median is the mean
of the two numbers.

76, 73, 70, 66, 54 are the numbers in a set of data. The median of this set is
78 because there are a odd number of data. There are 5 numbers before 78 and 5
numbers after 78.

number of data, we have to find the mean to find the median. The middle numbers
are 75 and 76, therefore 78 + 76/2 = 77 and that is the median.
The mode is the number that occurs most
frequently in a given set of data.
Data
Management is a short unit. Our test for this unit will consist of students
creating a survey question, surveying a certain number of students, creating
three separate graphs and inferring information from their graphs. This will
roughly take 3 days to complete. As of now, it will begin Friday, January 17
and continue until Tuesday, January 21. Please note no review will be completed
for this unit. Our next math unit is also a short one, Patterns in Numbers and Geometry, and will take us until the first
week of February.

Today
we used our language period to catch up on speeches and began spelling lesson
#16 – words with oo, ew, ue and ui and words with prefixes fore, post, over,
co, com and con.

A note on speeches
Speeches
are a 4-5 week process. A package was sent home, as students needed to complete
some work at home over the holidays. Grade 5 students will be expected to write
and memorize a 3-5 minute persuasive speech on a topic of their choice;
research will be needed, along with proper citation. When we are back from the
break we will begin by writing our three body paragraphs; one a day using
teacher guided writing. We will then write our introduction and conclusion.
Time will be given edit, re-write and memorize in class. Please see below an
outline of dates that we must stick to (as found in the speech package)!
