Good evening everyone!
I hope everyone had a
wonderful night!
I sent home the Polar Expressions Publishing letter and
information a few weeks back. I strongly encourage students to enter on their
own time. One of my students placed third last year in the short poem category.
Please keep in mind the due dates – poetry deadline is November 15 and the
short story deadline is November 30. Good luck!
We have a new initiative beginning here at SJA - The Attitude Journal. As you are all aware, each month we award a student who has shown a particular attribute. We also want to focus on the attitude which accompanies each attribute. We are doing this two ways. One way we are doing this is that once a month, one class will do a presentation on that month's attitude. Our class took the lead and Ronit, Ali, and Divyansh did a skit and song on the attitude 'Independence.' The second way we are doing this is by sending home a daily journal. This journal will be sent home once a month to each child in the classroom. Its purpose is for students to inquire and reflect on human commonality, diversity and multiple perspectives. We are hoping to expose students to diversity, teach tolerance and see commonalities amongst people, places, and cultures in the world. When it is your turn we ask that you please assist your child in writing a sentence or two about the monthly attitude (listed below). Students can write their sentence about a person, culture or country that they believe portrays this attitude. Please keep adding sentences to the same page.

MATH:
Today we focused on Volume – how much space an object
takes up. We measure volume using cubic centimetres, or cm3 (the 3 should be
little and on top of the m). In order to find the volume, we need to follow a
formula – length x width x height! For example if we have an object with a
length of 3, a width of 4 and height of 2 our formula would be 3 x 4 x 2. We
break it down like this – 3 x 4 = 12 then 12 x 2 = 24 cm3. Therefore the volume
of that object is 24 cubic centimetres. Please remember to add your units!
Homework:
-MMS pg 86-87
LANGUAGE:
Today we focused on nouns. We knew that common nouns are people,
places, and things. We also new proper nouns were the actual names of people,
places, and things, and most of them are capitalized. We learned how plural
nouns work (more than one we add an ‘s’ or ‘es’) and we learned a new type of
noun – abstract nouns. Abstract nouns name feelings or ideas! We completed some
worksheets and then took it up!
Homework:
-Read for 40 minutes
-Practice Guy Fawkes
-Spelling test tomorrow
UNIT OF INQUIRY:
Today we focused on pitch. We added the word pitch to our vocabulary
sheet and found out that pitch is how high or low a sound is. We completed two
experiments; one with Boomwhackers and one with textbooks and rulers. We
realized that long Boomwhackers make a low sound and short Boomwhackers make a
high pitch sound. If you bang a short and long Boomwhacker the pitch will
change. If the ruler is sticking out a lot from underneath the textbook the
pitch was high. If the ruler was barely sticking out the pitch was low. We also
started our sound art!
Homework:
I hope you have a wonderful night!
