Good afternoon everyone!

I hope you had a great day. Tuesday is a Day 4 and music. No school on Friday or Monday for Family Day weekend. After care invoices have been sent out and payments are due February 15. Scholastic orders are due by Thursday, February 20.

We began our day with a Valentine's Day house game, which saw each house earn points today. The object of the game was to dress up a teacher to get them ready for a date. We had 7 teachers who were chosen to participate (Mrs. Padovan, Ms. Foti, myself, Mr. Oliver, Mr. Foster and Mr. Whetstone), but we only had dresses for 3. So, we put it to a vote and in the end it was Mr. Foster, Mr. Oliver and Mr. Whetstone who were our lucky 3...boy they make pretty girls!!

Such good sports!

Happy Valentine's Day!

Please have a small chat with your child regarding proper hygiene with regards to coughing/sneezing and hand washing! Please know we are taking all precautions necessary at the school and in the classroom.

A note regarding re-registration
Hello SJA Families!

The Re-registration Deadline is fast approaching (February 18 by 4pm), and we want to ensure that your child’s registration is complete when returned, to avoid having to send home for missing information. Some common things that are missed:
·         Signatures on application form
·         Health card number
·         Emergency contact info (other than parent/guardian)
·         3 sets of initials on the tuition fee schedule (one for payment plan, and two at the bottom)
·         Completed payment methods form (parent name(s), student name(s), banking info (or void cheque), selecting business or personal use, and signature

Please ensure that you are returning:
·         Signed application form (indicate any changes to information)
·         Signed re-registration agreement
·         Completed and signed health history form
·         Completed and signed photo permission form
·         Completed and signed payment methods form
·         Initialed tuition fee schedule with payment plan selection
·         Bussing form (if applicable)

While we will do the best to accommodate existing families, after this deadline we will be accepting new families from our growing waitlist. Don’t be disappointed, hand in your completed re-registration package prior to the deadline.  Please note that the school will be closed Friday (for PD) and Monday (Family Day).

A note from Ms. Gandy regarding March hot lunch orders
The lunch site is now open and will close Wednesday, February 26th at 3:00 PM sharp.

Special of the month: French Toast with Whipped Cream and Syrup

All payments are to be made through Quickbooks by Friday, March 6th.

**Please do NOT order hot lunch for the following days: March 4th as that is the day we are going skiing and March 25th as we are planning a field trip. You will not be reimbursed nor will the lunch be saved.**

Caribou Math Contest
The next Caribou contest will be taking place Wednesday, February 26. Students are to arrive at 7:15 AM for a 7:30  start. They should bring their own charged devices. The interactive question for Grades 2-10 will be Bomb Defuser and for Grade 11/12 it will be GeomeTree requiring a construction involving lines and circles. Because Caribou’s GeomeTree site can be used to solve the interactive question, this site will be blocked at noon on Tuesday, February 25th. Both interactive questions are accessible from Caribou’s Games/History page.

Contact Caribou directly if you have any problems with the games.

There will be no history question in the February contest.

Our next extra-curricular activity is skiing/snowboarding at Glen Eden Ski Resort. The dates of the trip are January 22, February 19 and March 4. Please do not order lunch for these days; it will not be saved nor will a reimbursement be given. We will be leaving at 7:00 AM and returning by 4:00 PM at the latest. All rentals are included, however students are more than welcome to bring their own. Please do not order hot lunch for these days as we will be eating lunch at the ski hill – students are welcome to bring money to purchase food and drink items. Students must ensure they are dressed in appropriate ski gear; warm socks, long johns with comfy clothes, snow pants, warm mitts, a face protector (if possible) and a ski jacket. Please note that if students chose skiing, they will ski all three times. If students pick snowboarding, they will snowboard all three times. All students will have to pass each level before they are granted permission to ski on the big hill, no matter what their experience.

Unit of Inquiry

Today we through the process of voting and how it all works.

This unit will consist of roughly 3 weeks of learning and 2 weeks of summative. This unit will take us until March Break.

Homework
Bring in empty paper towel roles and/or toilet paper towel roles
Read and complete Charter of Rights and Freedoms and What Can I Do?

Inquiry into Mathematics

Today we looked at measuring the area of triangles using parallelograms. It was similar to yesterday lesson. We use the formula A = (b x h)/2.

Area, Perimeter and Volume is a longer unit with approximately 9 lessons. It will be the last unit before the end of Term 2 and will take us until the last week of February/first week of March.

Points to Remember

DO NOT FORGET TO INCLUDE YOUR UNITS
WHEN MEASURING AREA, WE USE SQUARE UNITS

Perimeter – To find the perimeter of a polygon: Add all of the sides lengths together
- To find the perimeter of a parallelogram: follow the formula (l+w) x 2
 - To find the perimeter of a square: Follow the formula l x w

Area - A = l x w and is measured in units squared (cm2, mm2, etc)

Area of a Parallelogram
When we estimate, we simple count the number of squares in the parallelogram, even the part squares that are one-half or greater.

Any side of a parallelogram is a base and the height is the length of the line segment.

The formula for finding the area of a parallelogram is A = b x h where b represents the base and h represents the height.

Triangles
Any side of a triangle is a base and the height is the perpendicular line segment that joins the base to the opposite vertex. We estimate the same way we did yesterday when measuring parallelograms; by counting full and part squares that are ½ or more.

Area = (base x height) / 2
A = (b x h)/2
**We divide by 2 because the area of a triangle is ½ the area of a rectangle with the same base and height. See picture below.**

Homework
MMS pg 140-141 if not completed in class - most did complete it
