Good afternoon everyone!

I hope you had a great day. Tomorrow is a Day 2 and gym – we are having our Jump Rope for Heart assembly, so it will be a shortened gym period, so no gym clothes required. Please wear house ties tomorrow! Graduation/sibling pictures are also taking place tomorrow.

Please have a small chat with your child regarding proper hygiene with regards to coughing/sneezing and hand washing! Please know we are taking all precautions necessary at the school and in the classroom.

A note from Ms. Gandy regarding March hot lunch orders
The lunch site is now open and will close Wednesday, February 26th at 3:00 PM sharp.

Special of the month: French Toast with Whipped Cream and Syrup

All payments are to be made through Quickbooks by Friday, March 6th.

**Please do NOT order hot lunch for the following days: March 4th as that is the day we are going skiing and March 25th as we are planning a field trip. You will not be reimbursed nor will the lunch be saved.**

Caribou Math Contest
The next Caribou contest will be taking place Wednesday, February 26. Students are to arrive at 7:15 AM for a 7:30  start. They should bring their own charged devices. The interactive question for Grades 2-10 will be Bomb Defuser and for Grade 11/12 it will be GeomeTree requiring a construction involving lines and circles. Because Caribou’s GeomeTree site can be used to solve the interactive question, this site will be blocked at noon on Tuesday, February 25th. Both interactive questions are accessible from Caribou’s Games/History page.

Contact Caribou directly if you have any problems with the games.

There will be no history question in the February contest.

Our next extra-curricular activity is skiing/snowboarding at Glen Eden Ski Resort. Our next trip is Wednesday, March 4. Please do not order lunch for these days; it will not be saved nor will a reimbursement be given. We will be leaving at 7:00 AM and returning by 4:00 PM at the latest. All rentals are included, however students are more than welcome to bring their own. Please do not order hot lunch for these days as we will be eating lunch at the ski hill – students are welcome to bring money to purchase food and drink items. Students must ensure they are dressed in appropriate ski gear; warm socks, long johns with comfy clothes, snow pants, warm mitts, a face protector (if possible) and a ski jacket. Please note that if students chose skiing, they will ski all three times. If students pick snowboarding, they will snowboard all three times. All students will have to pass each level before they are granted permission to ski on the big hill, no matter what their experience.

Unit of Inquiry

Today we began our art project – creating a dream catcher or a totem pole. Summative information coming your way soon!

This unit will consist of roughly 3 weeks of learning and 2 weeks of summative. This unit will take us until March Break. We will be heading to the Legislative Assembly of Ontario on Wednesday, March 25. Permission forms have been sent home and are due back along with payment by Wednesday, February 26.

Homework
Legislative Assembly permission form and payment due Wednesday, February 26

Inquiry into Mathematics

Today we learned about how to find the surface area of a triangular prism – finding the area of the triangular faces [(b x h)/2], finding the area of all 3 rectangles (b x h) and then adding the area of the triangle with the total area of the rectangles. This is a multi-step problem. Please see pic below. This was very difficult for most so we will be continuing this lesson tomorrow.

Showing us how to draw a net for a triangular prism!

It is looking like our Area, Perimeter and Volume test will be next Thursday, February 27.

Points to Remember

DO NOT FORGET TO INCLUDE YOUR UNITS
WHEN MEASURING AREA, WE USE SQUARE UNITS

Perimeter – To find the perimeter of a polygon: Add all of the sides lengths together
- To find the perimeter of a parallelogram: follow the formula (l+w) x 2
 - To find the perimeter of a square: Follow the formula l x w

Area - A = l x w and is measured in units squared (cm2, mm2, etc)

Area of a Parallelogram
When we estimate, we simple count the number of squares in the parallelogram, even the part squares that are one-half or greater.

Any side of a parallelogram is a base and the height is the length of the line segment.

The formula for finding the area of a parallelogram is A = b x h where b represents the base and h represents the height.

Triangles
Any side of a triangle is a base and the height is the perpendicular line segment that joins the base to the opposite vertex. We estimate the same way we did yesterday when measuring parallelograms; by counting full and part squares that are ½ or more.

Area = (base x height) / 2
A = (b x h)/2
**We divide by 2 because the area of a triangle is ½ the area of a rectangle with the same base and height. See picture below.**

Area of triangles using parallelograms - A = (b x h)/2.

Volume of a triangular prism = base area x height
**You may need to find the area of the triangle by using the formula (b x h)/2**
