A note about Year Ahead Day –
Monday, February 10
An annual event in the Lower School is our
highly anticipatedYear-Ahead Day. Students look forward to this fun tradition
at St. Jude’s Academy where they get to skip ahead and spend the day in the
next grade. Teachers will let students know who their Year-Ahead Day
teacher is at the end of day on Friday, February 7, 2020.
Please note that the placement for this
day does not indicate class placement for the following school year.
Sincerely,
The SJA Lower School Team
Our next extra-curricular
activity is skiing/snowboarding at Glen
Eden Ski Resort. The dates of the trip are January 22, February 19 and March 4. Please do not order lunch for
these days; it will not be saved nor will a reimbursement be given. We will be
leaving at 7:00 AM and returning by 4:00 PM at the latest. All rentals are
included, however students are more than welcome to bring their own. Please do
not order hot lunch for these days as we will be eating lunch at the ski hill –
students are welcome to bring money to purchase food and drink items. Students
must ensure they are dressed in appropriate ski gear; warm socks, long johns
with comfy clothes, snow pants, warm mitts, a face protector (if possible) and
a ski jacket. Please note that if students chose skiing, they will ski all
three times. If students pick snowboarding, they will snowboard all three
times. All students will have to pass each level before they are granted
permission to ski on the big hill, no matter what their experience.

Unit of Inquiry
Today we began our
Vote! It’s the Right Thing To Do Unit. Today we began our KWL chart for things
we know and things we want to know. We then read about 5 different types of government; Democracy, Republic, Monarchy, Oligarchy and Dictatorship...ask me what each type means. We watched a video outlining how Canada became a Democracy and students used their reading to write a paragraph about the pros and cons of two types of government.
This unit will
consist of roughly 3 weeks of learning and 2 weeks of summative. This unit will
take us until March Break.
Homework
Inquiry into
Mathematics
Today we wrote our math
test for Patterns in Numbers and Geometry. Tomorrow we will write our
pre-assessment for Area, Perimeter and Volume.
Our next unit is Area, Perimeter and Volume. This is a
longer unit with approximately 9 lessons. It will be the last unit before the
end of Term 2 and will take us until the last week of February/first week of
March.
Points to Remember

Today we began Shannen and A Dream For A
School. This novel study will have students competing different weekly roles in
a literature circle. It will be busy as students will need to read 3-6 chapters
each week. Today we read the prologue and chapter 1.

French – Mme. Sarah
This week the students learned about the parts of the body. They began
with the outer parts and the description of each part. They also learned about
the internal organs of the digestive system. Students were given a diagram with
the body with missing parts and students drew the missing parts. The digestive
system will be continued next week.
The
Grade 5s will be attending a French theatrical presentation ‘Les Insectes Sur Scene’ on Tuesday, March
