Hello everyone!
I hope
you had a great day. Thank you to everyone who supported Pink Shirt Day, a day
we are reminded that it takes only one person to stand up to bullying. Thank
you to Mr. Whetstone, Ms. Jaskolka, Mrs. Blair, Mr. Oliver, and Mr. Foster and
his Grade 1 class for the skit and showing us how to stand up to bullies. A
special thanks to this lovely gal for sharing with us her speech on bullying.

Tomorrow
is a Day 6, our SJA vs TMA Oral Competition and gym. Please ensure students are
dressed in their gym uniform ready to board the bus with proper gym shoes at
9:00 AM. Students will change into their
school day uniform after gym. Friday
is our Jump Rope for Heart. Jump Rope
for Heart donation packages have been sent home. We will be collecting donations for this
event from now until Friday, March 6. You can collect money or make a donation online.
Please take some time to check our lost and found, which is over flowing.
Anything that is not collected will be donated over March Break. On Saturday, the senior boys basketball team
will be competing in the Hart Classic Basketball Tournament at Meadowvale
Secondary School from 9 AM - 6 PM. There will be a draw for court
side Raptors 905 tickets for every game an SJA student attends. Get
out there and support you SJA senior boys basketball team!
A note from Ms. Hayward
Our next extra-curricular
activity is skiing/snowboarding at Glen
Eden Ski Resort. Our next trip is Wednesday,
March 4. Please do not order lunch for these days; it will not be saved nor
will a reimbursement be given. We will be leaving at 7:00 AM and returning by
4:00 PM at the latest. All rentals are included, however students are more than
welcome to bring their own. Please do not order hot lunch for these days as we
will be eating lunch at the ski hill – students are welcome to bring money to
purchase food and drink items. Students must ensure they are dressed in
appropriate ski gear; warm socks, long johns with comfy clothes, snow pants,
warm mitts, a face protector (if possible) and a ski jacket. Please note that
if students chose skiing, they will ski all three times. If students pick
snowboarding, they will snowboard all three times. All students will have to
pass each level before they are granted permission to ski on the big hill, no
matter what their experience.

Unit of Inquiry
Today
we continued our summative. In groups, students are responsible for creating a
new country, in which groups will create a flag, motto, and of course develop a
system of government . The summative is due on Thursday, March 5th and
presentations will be on Thursday, March 5th. See below the groups for the
government summative.

Mathematics
Today we took up our
math review for our upcoming test on Friday. Please use this to study!
Points to Remember
DO
NOT FORGET TO INCLUDE YOUR UNITS
WHEN
MEASURING AREA, WE USE SQUARE UNITS
Perimeter – To find the
perimeter of a polygon: Add all of the sides lengths together
- To find the perimeter
of a parallelogram: follow the formula (l+w) x 2
- To find the perimeter of a square: Follow
the formula l x w
Area
- A = l x w and is measured in units squared (cm2, mm2,
etc)
Area
of a Parallelogram
When we estimate, we simple count the number of
squares in the parallelogram, even the part squares that are one-half or
greater.
Any side of a parallelogram is a base and the
height is the length of the line segment.
The formula for finding
the area of a parallelogram is A = b x h
where b represents the base and h represents the height.
Triangles
Any side of a triangle
is a base and the height is the perpendicular line segment that joins the base
to the opposite vertex. We estimate the same way we did yesterday when measuring
parallelograms; by counting full and part squares that are ½ or more.
Area = (base x height)
/ 2
A = (b x h)/2
**We divide by 2
because the area of a triangle is ½ the area of a rectangle with the same base
and height. See picture below.**
Area
of triangles using parallelograms - A = (b x h)/2.
Volume
of a triangular prism = base area x height
**You may need to find
the area of the triangle by using the formula (b x h)/2**
Surface
area of a triangular prism – finding the area of the triangular faces [(b
x h)/2], finding the area of all 3 rectangles (b x h) and then adding the area
of the triangle with the total area of the rectangles. This is a multi-step
problem.

French – Mme. Sarah
The Grade 5s continued to talk about government. They examined the types
of government. They researched examples of countries with a prime minister, a
president and a king or queen as head of state. We discussed the Canadian
government. The conditional tense or mood was introduced when the question:
What would I do if I was the Prime Minister of Canada was brought up (to be
continued this week). Students were able to conjugate regular er verbs using
the future tense.
The
Grade 5s will be attending a French theatrical presentation ‘Les Insectes Sur Scene’ on Tuesday, March
31st from 9:30 to 11:30 AM.
