Good afternoon everyone!

I hope you had a great weekend and were able to enjoy the lovely weather!

Tomorrow is a Day 4, bake sale, causal day (for those who have paid their casual day fee), Pancake Tuesday and gym; no gym clothes needed as it is casual day. We will be having our pancake eating competition tomorrow, so gym will unfortunately be cut short again. Wednesday is the continuation of bake sale, Caribou math contest for those participating, last day to order March hot lunch, field trip forms are due and Pink Shirt Day (no red shirts, purple shirts or blue shirts – only pink). If students chose not to participate in Pink Shirt Day, they are expected to be in full uniform. Students who show up in anything but a pink shirt will be calling home to have their school day uniform brought in. Thursday is the SJA vs. TMA Oral Competition and Friday is our Jump Rope for Heart. Jump Rope for Heart donation packages have been sent home.  Our fundraising goal is $4000 will be collecting donations for this event from now until Friday, March 6. You can collect money or make a donation online.

Please have a small chat with your child regarding proper hygiene with regards to coughing/sneezing and hand washing! Please know we are taking all precautions necessary at the school and in the classroom.

A note from Ms. Hayward

A note from Ms. Gandy regarding March hot lunch orders
The lunch site is now open and will close Wednesday, February 26th at 3:00 PM sharp.

Special of the month: French Toast with Whipped Cream and Syrup

All payments are to be made through Quickbooks by Friday, March 6th.

**Please do NOT order hot lunch for the following days: March 4th as that is the day we are going skiing and March 25th as we are planning a field trip. You will not be reimbursed nor will the lunch be saved.**

Caribou Math Contest
The next Caribou contest will be taking place Wednesday, February 26. Students are to arrive at 7:15 AM for a 7:30  start. They should bring their own charged devices. The interactive question for Grades 2-10 will be Bomb Defuser and for Grade 11/12 it will be GeomeTree requiring a construction involving lines and circles. Because Caribou’s GeomeTree site can be used to solve the interactive question, this site will be blocked at noon on Tuesday, February 25th. Both interactive questions are accessible from Caribou’s Games/History page.

Contact Caribou directly if you have any problems with the games.

There will be no history question in the February contest.

Our next extra-curricular activity is skiing/snowboarding at Glen Eden Ski Resort. Our next trip is Wednesday, March 4. Please do not order lunch for these days; it will not be saved nor will a reimbursement be given. We will be leaving at 7:00 AM and returning by 4:00 PM at the latest. All rentals are included, however students are more than welcome to bring their own. Please do not order hot lunch for these days as we will be eating lunch at the ski hill – students are welcome to bring money to purchase food and drink items. Students must ensure they are dressed in appropriate ski gear; warm socks, long johns with comfy clothes, snow pants, warm mitts, a face protector (if possible) and a ski jacket. Please note that if students chose skiing, they will ski all three times. If students pick snowboarding, they will snowboard all three times. All students will have to pass each level before they are granted permission to ski on the big hill, no matter what their experience.

March Break Camps
Forms have been sent home regarding SJA’s awesome Adventure Camp. The wonderful camp will run from Monday to Friday both weeks of the March Break (March 9-13 & March 16-20) and is offered to student from JK to Grade 6. Field trips will take place on Thursday afternoons. Meal plans are also included if you chose to do so. Cash or QuickBooks payments only please. Don’t delay; register today! Contact Ms. Hughes at bsmith@stjudesacademy.com for any questions.

Unit of Inquiry

Today we went over the expectations for our summative task. In groups, students are responsible for creating a new country, in which groups will create a flag, motto, and of course develop a system of government . The summative is due on Thursday, March 5 and presentations will be on Thursday, March 5.

Group 1
Eric, Amber, Hayden, Zak, Aidan, Anthony and Sachi

Group 2
Zain, Jacob, Sanjana, Bosco, Kareena and Andreas

Group 3

Inquiry into Mathematics

Today we sketched polygons! We also spent some time going over the homework from the weekend as it still caused many to struggle. Thank you to my two helpers, Sachi and Jordan, who helped me teach it!

It is looking like our Area, Perimeter and Volume test will be next Friday, February 28.

Points to Remember

DO NOT FORGET TO INCLUDE YOUR UNITS
WHEN MEASURING AREA, WE USE SQUARE UNITS

Perimeter – To find the perimeter of a polygon: Add all of the sides lengths together
- To find the perimeter of a parallelogram: follow the formula (l+w) x 2
 - To find the perimeter of a square: Follow the formula l x w

Area - A = l x w and is measured in units squared (cm2, mm2, etc)

Area of a Parallelogram
When we estimate, we simple count the number of squares in the parallelogram, even the part squares that are one-half or greater.

Any side of a parallelogram is a base and the height is the length of the line segment.

The formula for finding the area of a parallelogram is A = b x h where b represents the base and h represents the height.

Triangles
Any side of a triangle is a base and the height is the perpendicular line segment that joins the base to the opposite vertex. We estimate the same way we did yesterday when measuring parallelograms; by counting full and part squares that are ½ or more.

Area = (base x height) / 2
A = (b x h)/2
**We divide by 2 because the area of a triangle is ½ the area of a rectangle with the same base and height. See picture below.**

Area of triangles using parallelograms - A = (b x h)/2.

Volume of a triangular prism = base area x height
**You may need to find the area of the triangle by using the formula (b x h)/2**

Surface area of a triangular prism – finding the area of the triangular faces [(b x h)/2], finding the area of all 3 rectangles (b x h) and then adding the area of the triangle with the total area of the rectangles. This is a multi-step problem.

French – Mme. Sarah

This past week, students continued discussing government. They examined the different types of government. Students researched examples of countries with a prime minister, a president and a king or queen as head of state. They discussed the Canadian government. The conditional tense or mood was introduced when the question: What would I do if I was the Prime Minister of Canada was brought up (to be continued next week). The Grade 5s were able to conjugate regular er verbs using the future tense.

The Grade 5s will be attending a French theatrical presentation ‘Les Insectes Sur Scene’ on Tuesday, March 31st from 9:30 to 11:30 AM.
