Unit of Inquiry
Today
we got together with the other Grade 5 classes. We began by looking at some
pictures and trying to pick out the changes in state. We conducted three different experiments using an ice cubes and water, Joshua's experiment from yesterday, and a tea bag and match. We started
each experiment by writing down our prediction/hypothesis and then our observations. Ask me what happened during each experiment!

Inquiry into
Mathematics
Today
we studied the number one million (1, 000, 000). We found out that 1, 000, 000
is equal to 10, 000 cubes. We also learned that 1, 000, 000 mm = 1 km, 1, 000,
000 pennies = $10, 000, $1, 000, 000 = ten thousand $100 bills, and that 1,
000, 000 minutes is about 2 years!! We used our multiplication and division
skills today!
Remember one strategy to use...when multiplying, multiply the single digits, then add the total number of zeros. For example, 100 x 10 = 1,000 (1 x 1 = 1 then add 3 zeros to get 1000). When we divide, we still divide the single digit numbers, but we take away zeros instead of adding them. For example, 1, 000, 000/10,000 = 100 (1/1 = 1 and if we take away 4 zeros from 1, 000, 000 you get 100).
