Good afternoon everyone!
I hope you all had a wonderful day and survived a soggy Halloween! Despite the rain we trick-or-treated for over an hour and got a huge haul!!
Our neighbourhood crew!
Nothing like a mob of trick-or-treaters!
Today we were awarded the Golden Broom for having the neatest cubbies!! Let's make it two weeks in a row Grade 5s!!
Look at that!!
Monday is
a Day 6 and due to curling, gym is cancelled. Important information
regarding curling – students are encouraged to wear their SJA gym uniform and
please be sure to send warm clothing (hat, mitts, warm socks) as it is cold on
the ice. Students must wear indoor gym shoes and each student MUST bring their
own helmet or they will not be able to participate. An acceptable helmet would
be a ski, hockey, or bike helmet – no points please! Acton Curling Club does
not provide helmets. Now that the cooler weather is here, please ensure students are dressed properly for recess - coats, hats, mitts, warm boots, ect. Students will not be allowed to stay inside if they are not dressed according. Tuesday is our Guy Fawkes Day, where we recite the Guy Fawkes poem. Guy Fawkes planned the failed Gunpowder Plot in 1605. We recite the poems on November 5th, as that is when he was found guarding the explosives.
Please check out our lost and found items, which is NOW
located in the gym in the far right corner. On Friday, November 8th at 4 PM all
left over items will be donated to the local Salvation Army.
Our
next extra-curricular activity is curling
at the Acton Curling Club. The dates and times of our trips are Monday, November 4th from 10-11
AM and Tuesday, November 19th from 1-2 PM. Permission forms and
waivers have been sent home and are due yesterday. There is no cost associated
with this trip. Students
are required to wear the SJA gym clothes, indoor gym shoes, and warm clothes
(coat, mitts, warm socks) as it is cold on the ice. **A kind reminder that
all students are required to bring and wear a helmet, as per the
permission form. Acceptable helmets are ski helmets, hockey helmets, and bike
helmets - no pointy edges please!**
Caribou Math
The next Caribou Contest takes place on Wednesday,
November 13th, 2019. Participants are to arrive at 7:15 am for a
7:30 am start. Bring a charged device, preferably a laptop, iPad or Tablet. You
have one hour to write the test.
This month’s test includes an interactive
question. The interactive question will differ by grade: Tangram for Grades 2
to 4, Chomp for Grades 5 to 10, and finally a GeomeTree construction involving
triangles for Grades 11/12. You can practice these now on Caribou’s
Games page. Let
Caribou know if you have any problems with the games.
Caribou strongly recommends familiarizing yourselves with these games before the contest. Because certain games pages can be used to solve the questions, these will be blocked from Tuesday morning, November 12th, (start of the contest in the far East) to Thursday evening, November 15th at 8 pm EST.
For Grades 3 to 12, there will be a history question about Emmy Noether. Students in these grades should read the relevant section of Caribou’s History page in your preferred language to prepare.

Our next field trip will
be to the ROM on Thursday, November 21st.
It will be an all day trip so please do not order hot lunch for this day, as
reimbursements will not be given, nor will hot lunches be saved. Permission
forms were sent home today and are due back, along with payments by Friday, November 8th. The
price of this trip is $32 and includes our transportation and admission to the
tour. If you are interested in volunteering, please ensure you have a
Vulnerable Sector Screen on file with the school prior to the trip. If you have
already submitted one, please be sure to sign our annual defence declaration at
the front reception.

Unit of Inquiry
Today
we played Kahoot and answered questions related to ancient Rome and Egypt.
The summative for this unit will have students recreating an ancient
artifact from one of the civilizations we studied. More information to come
closer to the end of the unit! As of now, we will be beginning the summative
the week of November 18th with a due date of Friday, November 30th.

Points to Remember
The
small hand tells the hour, the large hand tells the minutes, and the skinny
hand tells the seconds.
Every
small mark on a clock represents the minutes. The total number of minutes
between each number on a clock is 5.
A
quarter after is 15 minutes after, half-past is 30 minutes after, and a quarter
to is 15 minutes to the next hour.

24-hour notation is used at airports,
in the military, and at train stations. When we use 24-hour notation, there
will be 4 digits. We created our own
clock to help us.

Money up to $10,000 - we can use
estimation, rounding to the nearest $50 or $100, to help us with this. Don’t
forget those rounding rules – 0-4 round down to the floor and 5-9 round up to
the sky. Remember to line up the numbers in the proper place value column,
include the $ sign, and the decimal.
Surface area of a
rectangular prism (units square – cm2). Remember that to
find the area of a rectangle, we multiply the length by the width (l x w). In
order to find the surface area of a rectangular prism, we need to find the area
of the top and bottom faces, front and back faces, and right and left side
faces. Then we add those numbers together and multiply by 2 because a rectangle
is congruent – same shape and size.
Video
link for surface area -
For
example, using the rectangular prism above, the surface area would be;
Step 1 –find the area
of the front face, side face, and top face.
Area
of front
A
= L x W
A
= 3 cm x 9 cm
A
= 27 cm2
Area
of side
A
= L x W
A
= 5 cm x 3 cm
A
= 15 cm2
Area
of top
A
= L x W
A
= 9 cm x 5 cm
A
= 45 cm2
Step 2 – add the
answers from Step 1.
45
cm2 + 15 cm2 +
27 cm 2 = 87 cm2
Step 3 – multiply the
answer from Step 2 by 2 because each face has a congruent side.
87
cm2 x 2 =174 cm2
Volume (the amount of space
an object takes up) of a rectangular
prism (units cubed/cm3). To find the volume of the rectangular
prism, we multiply the length by the width by the height – V = L x W x H.
With
the rectangular prism above, the volume would be;
V
= L x W x H
V
= 4 cm x 4 cm x 6 cm
V
= 16 cm 2 x 6 cm
V
= 96 cm3
The
volume of the rectangular prism is 96 cm3.
Cubic
Meters - distance is measured in linear unit – cm, m, km. Area is measured in square units – cm 2, m2. Volume is measured
in cubic units – cm3, m3.
Linear units would be the perimeter of an object or the length of a pen. Square
units would be the area of a desk or the area of a postage stamp. Cubic units
would be the space in an elevator or the space in a closet.
1 m = 100 cm
1 m2 = 10,000 cm2
1 m3 = 1,000,000 cm3
Capacity is measures in mL and
L (pool, can of soup). Volume is
measured in cm3 and m3 (brick, hot air balloon)
