Good afternoon everyone!
I hope you all had a wonderful day! Tomorrow
is a Day 6 and gym. Please ensure students are dressed in their gym uniform
ready to board the bus with proper gym shoes at 9:00 AM. Students will change into their school day
uniform after gym. After care payments and Scholastic orders are due Friday, November 15th. Thank
you to all of those students who supported World Kindness Day today. Operation Christmas Child donations due Monday. If you would like to order school pictures, all orders and payments are due November 19th. December lunch orders are due on November 20th. We have begun our Christmas Concert rehearsals. The song we will be dancing to is Justin Bieber's Santa Claus is Coming to Town.
Tomorrow
is our in-school science fair judging. We will be judged between 12:45-2:15 PM.
Students will be allotted a total of 5 minutes…roughly 3 minutes to present and
then 2 minutes for the judge to ask questions. Students may bring in equipment
they used during their experiment, but it is not a requirement. Please note
that experiments will not be completed during the judging. Full winter uniforms tomorrow - no house hoodies!
December Lunches
The lunch site is now open. It
will close Wednesday,
November 20th at 3:00 PM.
Special of the month: Spaghetti and
Meatballs, which is available every Friday.
All payments are to be made through Quickbooks
by December 6th.
Our
next extra-curricular activity is curling
at the Acton Curling Club on Tuesday,
November 19th from 1-2 PM. Students are required to wear the SJA
gym clothes, indoor gym shoes, and warm clothes (coat, mitts, warm socks) as it
is cold on the ice. **A kind reminder that all students are required
to bring and wear a helmet, as per the permission form. Acceptable helmets are
ski helmets, hockey helmets, and bike helmets - no pointy edges please! Acton
Curling Club does not provide helmets.**
Our next field trip will
be to the ROM on Thursday, November 21st.
It will be an all day trip so please do not order hot lunch for this day, as
reimbursements will not be given, nor will hot lunches be saved. Permission
forms were sent home today and are due back, along with payments by Friday, November 8th. The
price of this trip is $32 and includes our transportation and admission to the
tour. If you are interested in volunteering, please ensure you have a
Vulnerable Sector Screen on file with the school prior to the trip. If you have
already submitted one, please be sure to sign our annual defence declaration at
the front reception.
Operation Christmas Child – This year, some classes from SJA are participating in
Operation Christmas Child. We are one of those class and I am hoping for your
help. We will be filling two boxes – one for a boy aged 2-4 and one for a girl
aged 2-4. All donations must be brought in by Monday, November 18 in order to
be able to send them off for shipping. A letter has been sent home with more
information and a list of 100 shoebox items. I will be covering the costs for
shipping. I thank you in advance.

Unit of Inquiry
Today
we began learning about Greek vases. We watched a video, learned about the
significance of them, and began creating our own!
The summative for this unit will have students recreating an ancient
artifact from one of the civilizations we studied. More information to come
closer to the end of the unit! As of now, we will be beginning the summative
the week of November 18th with a due date of Friday, November 29th.
Homework
Working on the rough copy of our vases!
Inquiry into
Mathematics
Today we learned how to construct
figures using isometric drawing. We began by creating a figure using linking cubes. Then we followed a
step-by-step procedure on how to draw them. My Grade 5s impressed me thoroughly
today. I was speaking to Ms. Chin before I came into the room this morning, and
what a surprise I had when I came in…all of my kiddos had all of their math out
ready to go…needless to say they earned themselves some house points!
This unit only has 5 lessons and
therefore, as of now, our Geometry math test will be Tuesday, November 19th.
Points to Remember
Angles
- acute
angle is less than 900, and right
angle is 900, and an obtuse
angle is grater than 900 but less than 1800. We also
came to realized that some angles are greater than or equal to 1800.
A straight angle is 1800
and a reflex angles measure between
1800 and 360o. One complete turn is 3600. A
protractor will become our best friend during this unit. Drawing a reflex angle
can be tricky. Please see this video for tips!
A regular figure has equal sides and
equal figures. An irregular figure
does not have all side equal and does not have all angles equal. A convex polygon has all angles less than
1800 and a concave polygon
has at least one reflex angle. We can classify and sort figures different ways
– we can sort triangles by the number of equal sides and by angle measure and
we can sort quadrilaterals in a Venn diagram.
When an angle is identified by 3
letters, the middle letter indicates the vertex of the angle. For example,
angle A is also angle CAB.

Inquiry into Language
Today
we practiced for our science fair tomorrow and for those participating in World
Kindness Day, we wrote our words of kindness on our linking chains.
