Good afternoon everyone!

I hope you all had a wonderful day! Tomorrow is a Day 2 and gym. Please ensure students are dressed in their gym uniform ready to board the bus with proper gym shoes at 9:00 AM.  Students will change into their school day uniform after gym. November hot lunch payments are due today. Well done to the Grade 5s for their recitals of Guy Fawkes. November hot lunch payments are due tomorrow and after care payments are due Friday, November 15th.

Please check out our lost and found items, which is NOW located in the gym in the far right corner. On Friday, November 8th at 4 PM all left over items will be donated to the local Salvation Army.

Our next extra-curricular activity is curling at the Acton Curling Club on Tuesday, November 19th from 1-2 PM. Students are required to wear the SJA gym clothes, indoor gym shoes, and warm clothes (coat, mitts, warm socks) as it is cold on the ice. **A kind reminder that all students are required to bring and wear a helmet, as per the permission form. Acceptable helmets are ski helmets, hockey helmets, and bike helmets - no pointy edges please! Acton Curling Club does not provide helmets.**

Caribou Math
The next Caribou Contest takes place on Wednesday, November 13th, 2019. Participants are to arrive at 7:15 am for a 7:30 am start. Bring a charged device, preferably a laptop, iPad or Tablet. You have one hour to write the test.

This month’s test includes an interactive question. The interactive question will differ by grade: Tangram for Grades 2 to 4, Chomp for Grades 5 to 10, and finally a GeomeTree construction involving triangles for Grades 11/12.  You can practice these now on Caribou’s Games page. Let Caribou know if you have any problems with the games.

Caribou strongly recommends familiarizing yourselves with these games before the contest.  Because certain games pages can be used to solve the questions, these will be blocked from Tuesday morning, November 12th, (start of the contest in the far East) to Thursday evening, November 15th at 8 pm EST.

For Grades 3 to 12, there will be a history question about Emmy Noether. Students in these grades should read the relevant section of Caribou’s History page in your preferred language to prepare.

Our next field trip will be to the ROM on Thursday, November 21st. It will be an all day trip so please do not order hot lunch for this day, as reimbursements will not be given, nor will hot lunches be saved. Permission forms were sent home today and are due back, along with payments by Friday, November 8th. The price of this trip is $32 and includes our transportation and admission to the tour. If you are interested in volunteering, please ensure you have a Vulnerable Sector Screen on file with the school prior to the trip. If you have already submitted one, please be sure to sign our annual defence declaration at the front reception.

Unit of Inquiry

Today we began learning about Greece. We studied the map and answered some questions about the geography.

The summative for this unit will have students recreating an ancient artifact from one of the civilizations we studied. More information to come closer to the end of the unit! As of now, we will be beginning the summative the week of November 18th with a due date of Friday, November 29th.

Inquiry into Mathematics
Today we investigated angles. We found out that an acute angle is less than 900, and right angle is 900, and an obtuse angle is grater than 900 but less than 1800. We also came to realized that some angles are greater than or equal to 1800. A straight angle is 1800 and a reflex angles measure between 1800 and 360o. One complete turn is 3600. A protractor will become our best friend during this unit. Drawing a reflex angle can be tricky. Please see this video for tips!

Two ways to construct a reflex angle!

This unit only has 5 lessons and therefore, as of now, our Geometry math test will be Tuesday, November 19th.

Inquiry into Language

Today we began learning how to write a narrative. We are learning this for our OWA (Ontario Writing Assessment) post-assessment. For this assessment, students will be expected to write a narrative story about a day in the life of an inanimate object (something that is not alive).
