Good afternoon everyone!

Happy Star Wars Day! May the 4th be with you!!!

What a great time we had a Royal Botanical Gardens! It was cold and rainy but a wonderful experience! I will post pictures tomorrow!

Important information and reminders:

A note from your Grade 6 class : Dear SJA Families,
The Grade 6 class invites you to attend the Exhibition on Friday, May 5, 2017, from 9 am to 11 am, or from 6 pm to 8 pm in the auditorium.
The Exhibition is the culminating task of the IB Primary Years Programme. It is where students work collaboratively to explore a local issue that interests them.  This year’s Grade 6s have chosen the following topics to explore:

Terrorism
Elder Abuse/Neglect
Physician-Assisted Dying
Developmental Disabilities
Animal Abuse/Neglect
Immigration
Garbage Pollution
Climate Change
Crime

Some great reasons why you should attend if your child is NOT in Grade 6 include:
·         Supporting and celebrating with the Grade 6s
·         Learning about these issues
·         Being aware of what will be expected of your child when they are in Grade 6
We hope to see you then.

Sincerely,
The Grade 6 Class

We will be viewing the presentations next Friday. This is a 6 week long project that the Grade 6’s work very hard on. So please feel free to come and support the Grade 6’s!

Math

Today we were at RBG!

An improper fraction is more that 1 whole and when the numerator (top number) is bigger than the denominator (bottom number). For example, 7/3.

A mixed number is has a whole number and a fraction. It is another way to write an improper fraction. For example, 2 & 2/3.

We can change an improper fraction into a mixed number and vice versa!

CHANGING AN IMPROPER FRACTION INTO A MIXED NUMBER:

9/4 =

Step 1: Ask yourself how many times does 4 go into 9? The answer is 2.

Step 2: Ask yourself what is 4 (the denominator) x 2 (the answer from step 1) = 8.

Step 3: Take the 9 (the numerator) and – 8 (the answer from step 2)= 1

Answer = 2 & ¼ (the 2 come from step 1, the 1 comes from step 3, and the 4 stays the same as in the original fraction)

**The denominator will not change – it will stay the same**

CHANGING A MIXED NUMBER INTO AN IMPROPER FRACTION:

3 & ¼

Step 1: Multiply the whole number by the denominator (3 x 4 = 12)

Step 2: Add the answer from step one (12) to the numerator
(12 + 1 = 13)

Answer = 13/4

**The denominator will not change – it will stay the same**

Today we learned about Cinquain poems! A Cinquain poem is a 5-line poem using nouns, verbs, and adjectives to describe a topic. It ends with a phrase about the topic and a synonym for the topic! Line 1 is your topic. Line 2 is 2 words to describe your topic (adjectives). Line 3 is 3 ‘ING’ words used to describe your topic. Line 3 is a short phrase about your topic (do not include your topic word in the phrase). Line 5 is a synonym (means the same) as your topic word from line 1.

Barking, Wagging, Running
