Good afternoon everyone!

I hope you all had a night!

Our RBG trip is tomorrow. It will take place rain or shine. Gym uniform is required, as well as proper outdoor gear as we will be spending our time outside. We will leave after lunch at 11 and return around 3. Please pack a lunch as we will be eating before and just in case hot lunch is not ready, we will eat it upon our return!

Important information and reminders:

I finally have the grand total for the SPRING FUNDRAISER!! SJA raised $11, 537. 74….I can’t believe it! What an amazing job! Mr. Foster’s Grade 1 class took top place by raising over $800 and Ms. Bancud’s SK class took second place. Well-done, SJA! You have won your chance to water balloon your teacher…date and time to be announced!

A note from your Grade 6 class : Dear SJA Families,
The Grade 6 class invites you to attend the Exhibition on Friday, May 5, 2017, from 9 am to 11 am, or from 6 pm to 8 pm in the auditorium.
The Exhibition is the culminating task of the IB Primary Years Programme. It is where students work collaboratively to explore a local issue that interests them.  This year’s Grade 6s have chosen the following topics to explore:

Terrorism
Elder Abuse/Neglect
Physician-Assisted Dying
Developmental Disabilities
Animal Abuse/Neglect
Immigration
Garbage Pollution
Climate Change
Crime

Some great reasons why you should attend if your child is NOT in Grade 6 include:
·         Supporting and celebrating with the Grade 6s
·         Learning about these issues
·         Being aware of what will be expected of your child when they are in Grade 6
We hope to see you then.

Sincerely,
The Grade 6 Class

We will be viewing the presentations next Friday. This is a 6 week long project that the Grade 6’s work very hard on. So please feel free to come and support the Grade 6’s!

A note from Mrs. Smith: The lunch ordering system is now open for June. Please ensure you place your order no later than Friday, May 19 at 4:00 PM. Lunch payment is due by May 23rd 4:00 PM or unfortunately your lunch order will be cancelled for the month of June. Please keep in mind that there are no reimbursements for field trips or absences. A note from Mrs. Kerr and the MYP students: MYP students have been working very hard over the past little while working on their annual Shakespeare play ‘The Taming of the Shrew.’ It is time for them to show off their hard work. ‘The Taming of the Shrew’ will take place on Wednesday, May 10 at 7:30 PM. Doors will open at 7:00 PM.

Today we took our time in math so we missed our language period. We did find some time to practice Spelling Bee! The top 3 Grade 4 spellers will be chosen on Thursday, May 11 to compete in our SJA Spelling Bee competition. **Please note that those students in Grade 5 spelling will join Ms. Ramnarine and the Grade 5’s on Monday, May 8 from 9-11!**

Homework – Read for at least 30 minutes

-Practice Spelling Bee

Math

Today we spent a full hour and a half on math!! We took time to take up last night homework and review yesterdays work. Then we began looking at improper fractions and mixed numbers. This is very challenging, so most of us worked together through each question. They seemed to be getting the hang of it near the end.

An improper fraction is more that 1 whole and when the numerator (top number) is bigger than the denominator (bottom number). For example, 7/3.

A mixed number is has a whole number and a fraction. It is another way to write an improper fraction. For example, 2 & 2/3.

We can change an improper fraction into a mixed number and vice versa!

CHANGING AN IMPROPER FRACTION INTO A MIXED NUMBER:

9/4 =

Step 1: Ask yourself how many times does 4 go into 9? The answer is 2.

Step 2: Ask yourself what is 4 (the denominator) x 2 (the answer from step 1) = 8.

Step 3: Take the 9 (the numerator) and – 8 (the answer from step 2)= 1

Answer = 2 & ¼ (the 2 come from step 1, the 1 comes from step 3, and the 4 stays the same as in the original fraction)

**The denominator will not change – it will stay the same**

CHANGING A MIXED NUMBER INTO AN IMPROPER FRACTION:

3 & ¼

Step 1: Multiply the whole number by the denominator (3 x 4 = 12)

Step 2: Add the answer from step one (12) to the numerator
(12 + 1 = 13)

Answer = 13/4

**The denominator will not change – it will stay the same**

Homework – MMS pg 124-125

UOI

Today we learned about Colour and Shape poems. A Colour poem is about a colour and we write about the 5 senses we think of with regards to that colour. A Shape poem describes the object and is written in the same shape! We created both together as a class and then we created our own. The Colour poem was done on paint samples from Home Depot and the Shape poem is for homework!

Homework – Create a Shape poem

Have a great night!
