Math
Today we began looking at decimals. In particular, we studied Tenths! A . between numbers represents a decimal. Numbers to the left of the decimal = whole numbers (2.). Numbers to the right of the decimal = the part (.2). Place values comes into play with decimals. One number before the decimal are the ones. Two numbers before the decimal are called tens. Three numbers before the decimal are called hundreds. One number after the decimal is called tenths. Two numbers after the decimal are hundredths. Three numbers after the decimal are thousandths.
Examples of changing fractions and mixed numbers into decimals:
1 & 1/10 = 1.1
3 & 6/10 = 3.6
2 & 4/10 = 1.4
5/10 = 0.5
Examples of changing decimals into fractions and mixed numbers:
1.8 = 1 & 8/10
0.2 = 2/10
7.5 = 7 & 5/10
HINTS:
An improper fraction is more
that 1 whole and when the numerator (top number) is bigger than the denominator
(bottom number). For example, 7/3.
A mixed number is has a whole
number and a fraction. It is another way to write an improper fraction. For
example, 2 & 2/3.
We can change an improper fraction into a mixed number and vice versa!
CHANGING AN IMPROPER
FRACTION INTO A MIXED NUMBER:
9/4 =
Step 1: Ask yourself how many times does 4 go into 9? The answer is 2.
Step 2: Ask yourself what is 4 (the denominator) x 2 (the answer from
step 1) = 8.
Step 3: Take the 9 (the numerator) and – 8 (the answer from step 2)= 1
Answer = 2 & ¼ (the 2 come from step 1, the 1 comes from step 3, and
the 4 stays the same as in the original fraction)
**The denominator will not change – it will stay the same**
CHANGING A MIXED NUMBER INTO
AN IMPROPER FRACTION:
3 & ¼
Step 1: Multiply the whole number by the denominator (3 x 4 = 12)
Step 2: Add the answer from step one (12) to the numerator
(12 + 1 = 13)
Answer = 13/4
**The denominator will not change – it will stay the same**
