Today we did our lesson #33 spelling activities! We also did a round of Spelling Bee.

The top 3 Grade 4 spellers will be chosen on Thursday, May 11 to compete in our SJA Spelling Bee competition. We will start sharply at 9 AM!

I have sent home spelling lists from the grade above. If we run out of words, we go the next level. Therefore, Grade 4 spellers will go to Grade 5 words and Grade 5 spellers will go to Grade 6!

Congratulations to Chelsea, Saanvi, and Tristan who made it to the SJA finals along with Jarniko, Emilia, and Klara! I am so proud of you! Well done!

Math

Today we had a pop quiz of what we have covered this far in math! We also learned how to compare and order fractions. For example 1/2 > 1/6 and 2/10 < 5/10.

IF a fraction has different denominators then you have to change them to the same fraction. For example, 1/3 and 1/4. You first need to find the smallest number that both 3 and 4 will go into...12 is the answer. Then you have to multiply the 1 by 4 (because 3 x 4 = 12) to make it 4 and then you have to multiply 1 by 3 (4 x 3 = 12). So you new fractions are 4/12 and 3/12!

HINTS:
An improper fraction is more that 1 whole and when the numerator (top number) is bigger than the denominator (bottom number). For example, 7/3.

A mixed number is has a whole number and a fraction. It is another way to write an improper fraction. For example, 2 & 2/3.

We can change an improper fraction into a mixed number and vice versa!

CHANGING AN IMPROPER FRACTION INTO A MIXED NUMBER:

9/4 =

Step 1: Ask yourself how many times does 4 go into 9? The answer is 2.

Step 2: Ask yourself what is 4 (the denominator) x 2 (the answer from step 1) = 8.

Step 3: Take the 9 (the numerator) and – 8 (the answer from step 2)= 1

Answer = 2 & ¼ (the 2 come from step 1, the 1 comes from step 3, and the 4 stays the same as in the original fraction)

**The denominator will not change – it will stay the same**

CHANGING A MIXED NUMBER INTO AN IMPROPER FRACTION:

3 & ¼

Step 1: Multiply the whole number by the denominator (3 x 4 = 12)

Step 2: Add the answer from step one (12) to the numerator
(12 + 1 = 13)

Answer = 13/4

**The denominator will not change – it will stay the same**

Homework – MMS pg 126-127
