Unit of Inquiry

Today we continued working on our science fair project. Today we focused on our materials and procedure. I continued to review all aspects of the rough copy for most today.

Information regarding the summative was sent home over the weekend. For this summative, students will be completing their science fair project. Students must pick an experiment that has to do with matter. Next week, we will be working our way through the Scientific Method and rough copies of our questions, hypothesis, variables, and research. Over Thanksgiving weekend, students will be required to conduct their experiment three separate times, record all observations, and write down the results. The week of October 15-18th, students will complete their good copies, create their graph, and begin board set up. The summative will be due Friday, October 18th, with presentations taking place this day. Our school wide science fair is happening on Friday, November 15th. Don’t forget to take some pictures of you completing your experiment.

Permission forms for our Scientists in the School workshop on Tuesday, October 22nd have been sent home – please note new date. All forms and payments (either cash or Quickbooks – no cheques please) are due by Friday, October 11th – no exceptions. Please note that reimbursements will not be given for students who are absent the day of the workshop. If you would like to volunteer, please note that you must have a vulnerable sector screen on file with the school. If you already have one, please ensure that you sign the annual offence declaration.

Homework
Complete your experiment 3 times this weekend – take pictures
Record all observations
Write your results
Be ready to start good copies and board set up on Tuesday
Summative due Friday, October 18th

Inquiry into Mathematics

Today we began our review. We will be taking it up on Tuesday in preparation for our test on Wednesday. Our next unit will be measurement and will deal with time, money, volume, capacity, and surface area.

Our test for Number Patterns will take place on Wednesday, October 16th. Please use the review to study.

Points to Remember

Divisibility Rules:

A whole number is divisible by:

2 if the number is even
3 if the sum of the digits is divisible by 3
4 if the number represented by the tens and ones digits is divisible by 4
5 if the ones digits is 0 or 5
6 if the number is divisible by 2 and by 3
8 if the number represented by the hundreds, tens, and ones digits is divisible by 8
9 is the sum of the digits is divisible by 9
10 if the ones digits is a 0

Solving equations by using guess or check or inverse operations. For example 74 + A = 216 -> I can move all of the numbers so they are on the same side -> A = 216 – 74 -> please remember that when you bring a number on the other side of the = sign that you must change the operation (+ changed to -). Therefore A = 142, which makes our equation true -> 74 + 142 = 216.

Numbers such as 25 and -10 are integers. Integers can be represented on a number line, which can be vertical or horizontal. We use integers to represent quantities that have both size and direction. For example, I earned $45 for cutting the grass would be represented as +$45 or $45. I took 5 steps backwards would be represented as -5. Please note that if the integer is written with no sign, the integer is positive. You always need to include the – sign with integers.

Homework
Complete math review for Tuesday
Math test on Wednesday, October 16th

Inquiry into Language

Today we continued to working on our Portugal project. By the end of this week, students should have completed their research and rough work. Next week will be working on good copies and decorating our board. We also visited our reading buddies and wrote our spelling lesson #5 test.

Please visit this page to reference back to when making citations:

Percy Jackson - Please remember that comprehension questions are to be in full sentences that begin with a capital letter and ending with either a period, exclamation point, or question mark. Please use the book to help with spelling and to be sure to answer each question completely, with support from the book. I have conferenced with each student as to my expectations moving forward.

Our annual International Day is quickly approaching and will take place on Thursday, October 17th. Parents will be able to view our fantastic projects on October 17th from 2:30 – 3:15 PM. This year the country we will be learning about is Portugal. Beginning Tuesday, and for the following few weeks, we will be busy researching and putting together a fabulous presentation on our country. Students will need devices and books from a local library to complete their research. Please see the following groups and topics for this project.

Clothing/Art/Dance – Jacob and Anthony
Food – Sachi, Max, and Maya
Holidays/Traditions – Amber and Kareena
Sport/Toys/Games – Jai, Aidan, Joshua
Imports/Exports – Andreas, Zak, Bosco
Laws/Policies – Jordan and Zain
Culture/Language/Landscape – Sanjana, Hayden, Alyssa

French – Mme. Sarah

This week we are continuing solids, liquids, and gases. We have used the ingredients in making a pizza to emphasize the three states of matter. Yesterday we did the ingredients in a pizza and today we did the partitive form, which were placed before the correct foods and liquids. Students began to use j'ai besoin de with foods on their worksheets and will complete for homework.

The Grade 5s will be attending a French theatrical presentation ‘Les Insectes Sur Scene’ on Tuesday, March 31st from 9:30 to 11:30 AM. The cost of this trip is $19. Tickets need to be ordered in advance, so please ensure the permission form and payments (cash or Quickbooks) are due back by Monday, October 21st.
