Unit of Inquiry

Today we began learning about ancient Rome. We studied the map of Italy, learned about the daily life of boys and girls, and studied why Italy could easily defend invaders. Ask me how!

The summative for this unit will have students recreating an ancient artifact from one of the civilizations we studied. More information to come closer to the end of the unit! As of now, we will be beginning the summative the week of November 18th with a due date of Friday, November 30th.

Ms. Cass's brother just returned from a trip to Egypt and sent us these fantastic pictures!

Inquiry into Mathematics

Today we discussed capacity and volume. Capacity if measures in mL and L (pool, can of soup). Volume is measured in cm3 and m3 (brick, hot air balloon). When converting, remember these hints!

As of now our math test for this unit will be Monday, November 4th.

Points to Remember

The small hand tells the hour, the large hand tells the minutes, and the skinny hand tells the seconds.

Every small mark on a clock represents the minutes. The total number of minutes between each number on a clock is 5.

A quarter after is 15 minutes after, half-past is 30 minutes after, and a quarter to is 15 minutes to the next hour.

AM – 12:00 midnight to 11:59 AM
PM – 12:00 noon to 11:59 PM

12:00 = 00:00
1:00 = 13:00
2:00 = 14:00
3:00 = 15:00
4:00 = 16:00
5:00 = 17:00
6:00 = 18:00
7:00 = 19:00
8:00 = 20:00
9:00 = 21:00
10:00 = 22:00
11:00 = 23:00
12:00 = 24:00

24-hour notation is used at airports, in the military, and at train stations. When we use 24-hour notation, there will be 4 digits.  We created our own clock to help us.

4:45 = 16:45
00:05 = 12:05
7:00 = 18:00
23:15 = 11:15

Money up to $10,000 - we can use estimation, rounding to the nearest $50 or $100, to help us with this. Don’t forget those rounding rules – 0-4 round down to the floor and 5-9 round up to the sky. Remember to line up the numbers in the proper place value column, include the $ sign, and the decimal.

Surface area of a rectangular prism (units square – cm2). Remember that to find the area of a rectangle, we multiply the length by the width (l x w). In order to find the surface area of a rectangular prism, we need to find the area of the top and bottom faces, front and back faces, and right and left side faces. Then we add those numbers together and multiply by 2 because a rectangle is congruent – same shape and size.

Video link for surface area -

For example, using the rectangular prism above, the surface area would be;

Step 1 –find the area of the front face, side face, and top face.
Area of front
A = L x W
A = 3 cm x 9 cm
A = 27 cm2

Area of side
A = L x W
A = 5 cm x 3 cm
A = 15 cm2

Area of top
A = L x W
A = 9 cm x 5 cm
A = 45 cm2

Step 2 – add the answers from Step 1.
45 cm2 + 15 cm2  + 27 cm 2  = 87 cm2

Step 3 – multiply the answer from Step 2 by 2 because each face has a congruent side.
87 cm2 x 2 =174 cm2
Volume (the amount of space an object takes up) of a rectangular prism (units cubed/cm3). To find the volume of the rectangular prism, we multiply the length by the width by the height – V = L x W x H.

With the rectangular prism above, the volume would be;

V = L x W x H
V = 4 cm x 4 cm x 6 cm
V = 16 cm 2 x 6 cm
V = 96 cm3
The volume of the rectangular prism is 96 cm3.
Cubic Meters  - distance is measured in linear unit – cm, m, km. Area is measured in square units – cm 2, m2. Volume is measured in cubic units – cm3, m3. Linear units would be the perimeter of an object or the length of a pen. Square units would be the area of a desk or the area of a postage stamp. Cubic units would be the space in an elevator or the space in a closet.
1 m = 100 cm
1 m2 = 10,000 cm2
1 m3 = 1,000,000 cm3
