Unit of Inquiry
Today
we wrote a pop quiz! We also began a matter crossword!
It is hard to believe but we are at the end of our matter unit. We
will be sending home information regarding the summative tomorrow. For this summative,
students will be completing their science fair project. Students must pick an
experiment that has to do with matter. Next week, we will be working our way
through the Scientific Method and rough copies of our questions, hypothesis,
variables, and research. Over Thanksgiving weekend, students will be required
to conduct their experiment three separate times, record all observations, and
write down the results. The week of October 15-18th, students will
complete their good copies, create their graph, and begin board set up. The
summative will be due Friday, October 18th, with presentations
taking place this day. Our school wide science fair is happening on Friday,
November 15th. Don’t forget to take some pictures of you completing
your experiment.
Permission forms for our Scientists
in the School workshop on Tuesday,
October 22nd have been sent home – please note new date. All
forms and payments (either cash or Quickbooks – no cheques please) are due by
Friday, October 11th – no exceptions. Please note that
reimbursements will not be given for students who are absent the day of the
workshop. If you would like to volunteer, please note that you must have a vulnerable sector
screen on file with the school. If you already have one, please ensure that you
sign the annual offence declaration.

Inquiry into
Mathematics
Today
we learned about recursive patterns. A recursive pattern can be found by applying the previous term (numbers/answers) to the pattern rule. For example, our pattern rule is; Start at 7. Multiply by 2 then add 1 each time - 7 x 2 + 1 = 15, 15 x 2 + 1 = 31, 31 x 2 + 1 = 63, 63 x 2 + 1 = 127. We are basically taking our the answer from our equation and applying it to our pattern rule.
This
is a short unit, with only 5 lessons. As of know, our test for Number Patterns
will be on Tuesday, October 15th. I am trying desperately to get the math tests back, but I still have a few students who have not written the test due to illness...my hope is by early next week!

Inquiry into Language
Today
we had a workshop on how to properly cite different pieces of work. Ms. Hayward was kind enough to come and lead this for the Grade 5s. We discussed what plagiarism was and how we need to give credit to those who created set piece of work. We also did some examples.
Please visit this page to reference back to when making citations:
Percy
Jackson - Please remember that comprehension questions are to be in full
sentences that begin with a capital letter and ending with either a period,
exclamation point, or question mark. Please use the book to help with spelling
and to be sure to answer each question completely, with support from the book.
I have conferenced with each student as to my expectations moving forward.
Our
