Good afternoon everyone!
I hope you all had a wonderful day! Tomorrow
is a Day 4 and gym. Students will not need their gym uniform is they are
participating in our Halloween/Harvest Spirit Day, unless they want to. Students who are not
participating will need their gym uniform and their school day uniform. Thank you to those students who
brought in baked good for our bake sale. It is very much appreciated! Tomorrow is our Halloween/Harvest Spirit Day. Students may come dressed in harvest colours or their Halloween
costume – no weapons, scary masks, or scary face paint. Please check out our lost and found items, which is NOW
located in the gym in the far right corner. On Friday, November 8th at 4 PM all
left over items will be donated to the local Salvation Army.
After almost 5 weeks he is free!
Thanks to these gals, who gave up their recess to help me with the bake sale!
Our next extra-curricular
activity is curling at the Acton
Curling Club. The dates and times of our trips are Monday, November 4th from 10-11 AM and Tuesday, November 19th
from 1-2 PM. Permission forms and waivers have been sent home and are due
back by Thursday, October 31st.
There is no cost associated with this trip. We are also planning a trip to the ROM on Thursday, November 21st.
It will be an all day trip so please do not order hot lunch for this day, as
reimbursements will not be given, nor will hot lunches be saved. If you are
interested in volunteering, please ensure you have a Vulnerable Sector Screen
on file with the school prior to the trip. If you have already submitted one,
please be sure to sign our annual defence declaration at the front reception.

Unit of Inquiry
Today
we completed a cut and paste activity, in which we put important dates on a timeline.
The summative for this unit will have students recreating an ancient
artifact from one of the civilizations we studied. More information to come
closer to the end of the unit! As of now, we will be beginning the summative
the week of November 18th with a due date of Friday, November 30th.
Homework
Inquiry into
Mathematics
Today we began our math review. This is
due on Friday, as we will be taking it up. Our math test for this unit
will be Monday, November 4th.
Points to Remember
The
small hand tells the hour, the large hand tells the minutes, and the skinny
hand tells the seconds.
Every
small mark on a clock represents the minutes. The total number of minutes
between each number on a clock is 5.
A
quarter after is 15 minutes after, half-past is 30 minutes after, and a quarter
to is 15 minutes to the next hour.

24-hour notation is used at airports,
in the military, and at train stations. When we use 24-hour notation, there
will be 4 digits. We created our own
clock to help us.

Money up to $10,000 - we can use
estimation, rounding to the nearest $50 or $100, to help us with this. Don’t
forget those rounding rules – 0-4 round down to the floor and 5-9 round up to
the sky. Remember to line up the numbers in the proper place value column,
include the $ sign, and the decimal.
Surface area of a rectangular
prism (units square – cm2). Remember that to find the area of a
rectangle, we multiply the length by the width (l x w). In order to find the
surface area of a rectangular prism, we need to find the area of the top and
bottom faces, front and back faces, and right and left side faces. Then we add
those numbers together and multiply by 2 because a rectangle is congruent –
same shape and size.
Video
link for surface area -
For
example, using the rectangular prism above, the surface area would be;
Step 1 –find the area
of the front face, side face, and top face.
Area
of front
A
= L x W
A
= 3 cm x 9 cm
A
= 27 cm2
Area
of side
A
= L x W
A
= 5 cm x 3 cm
A
= 15 cm2
Area
of top
A
= L x W
A
= 9 cm x 5 cm
A
= 45 cm2
Step 2 – add the
answers from Step 1.
45
cm2 + 15 cm2 +
27 cm 2 = 87 cm2
Step 3 – multiply the
answer from Step 2 by 2 because each face has a congruent side.
87
cm2 x 2 =174 cm2
Volume (the amount of space
an object takes up) of a rectangular
prism (units cubed/cm3). To find the volume of the rectangular
prism, we multiply the length by the width by the height – V = L x W x H.
With
the rectangular prism above, the volume would be;
V
= L x W x H
V
= 4 cm x 4 cm x 6 cm
V
= 16 cm 2 x 6 cm
V
= 96 cm3
The
volume of the rectangular prism is 96 cm3.
Cubic
Meters - distance is measured in linear unit – cm, m, km. Area is measured in square units – cm 2, m2. Volume is measured
in cubic units – cm3, m3.
Linear units would be the perimeter of an object or the length of a pen. Square
units would be the area of a desk or the area of a postage stamp. Cubic units
would be the space in an elevator or the space in a closet.
1 m = 100 cm
1 m2 = 10,000 cm2
1 m3 = 1,000,000 cm3
Capacity is measures in mL and
L (pool, can of soup). Volume is
measured in cm3 and m3 (brick, hot air balloon)

Jackson - Please remember that comprehension questions are to be in full
sentences that begin with a capital letter and ending with either a period,
exclamation point, or question mark. Please use the book to help with spelling
and to be sure to answer each question completely, with support from the book.
