Good afternoon!

I hope you all had a wonderful day! Tomorrow is a Day 4 and gym. Please ensure students are dressed in their gym uniform ready to board the bus with proper gym shoes at 9:00 AM.  Students will change into their school day uniform after gym. Casual Day forms are due by Friday, October 25. Please submit the form indicating if your child(ren) will or will not be participating.  Please note that Casual Day was not included in registration this year, so if you would like your child(ren) to participate, please submit the form and $20 cash payment.

A note from Ms. Hayward - October 17 marked the first day of Secret Path Week, ccommemorating the legacies of Gord Downie (died Oct. 17, 2017) and Chanie Wenjack (died Oct. 23, 1966 ), who died after running away from residential school and attempting to walk home. We are calling on Canadians to answer Downie’s call to action to “DO SOMETHING” to learn about Residential Schools, their impact on Canadian Indigenous people and communities and Canada as a whole, and to learn about and celebrate Indigenous Culture as an important part of Canadian culture.

As you may notice, the Library Bulletin Board this week is all about ReconciliACTION.  It features challenges, mostly from the Indian Horse Next150 Challenges site.  Each challenge aims to promote learning about indigenous culture and indigenous rights.  I hope we can try different challenges on our own or as classes (photos, lists, etc. can be added to the bulletin board).

I'd like to challenge you to do a challenge with your class at some point in the year (and share with me so we can add it to the library boards/blogs).  Or share something else you've done to learn about indigenous culture.

This week I've completed the "Whose Land Challenge".  I want to challenge you/your class to do the same and have students present a proper acknowledgement at morning announcements.

Unit of Inquiry

Today we attended our matter SITS workshop and showed Scientist Marsha all that we leaned during our What's the Matter Unit. We completed some hands-on experiments and had a ton of fun! We also continued learning about ancient civilizations. This week we will focus on Egypt. Today we learned about the geography aspect of ancient Egypt and how the Egyptians used water. We found out they use water almost the same ways we do. Ask me the ways they used water!

The summative for this unit will have students recreating an ancient artifact from one of the civilizations we studied. More information to come closer to the end of the unit! As of now, we will be beginning the summative the week of November 18th with a due date of Friday, November 30th.

Thanks Scientist Marsha for a fun morning!

Inquiry into Mathematics

Today we examined money up to $10,000. We can use estimation, rounding to the nearest $50 or $100, to help us with this. Don’t forget those rounding rules – 0-4 round down to the floor and 5-9 round up to the sky. Remember to line up the numbers in the proper place value column, include the $ sign, and the decimal.

As of now our math test for this unit will be Monday, November 4th.

Points to Remember

The small hand tells the hour, the large hand tells the minutes, and the skinny hand tells the seconds.

Every small mark on a clock represents the minutes. The total number of minutes between each number on a clock is 5.

A quarter after is 15 minutes after, half-past is 30 minutes after, and a quarter to is 15 minutes to the next hour.

AM – 12:00 midnight to 11:59 AM
PM – 12:00 noon to 11:59 PM

12:00 = 00:00
1:00 = 13:00
2:00 = 14:00
3:00 = 15:00
4:00 = 16:00
5:00 = 17:00
6:00 = 18:00
7:00 = 19:00
8:00 = 20:00
9:00 = 21:00
10:00 = 22:00
11:00 = 23:00
12:00 = 24:00

24-hour notation is used at airports, in the military, and at train stations. When we use 24-hour notation, there will be 4 digits.  We created our own clock to help us.

4:45 = 16:45
00:05 = 12:05
7:00 = 18:00
23:15 = 11:15
