I hope you all had a wonderful day! We finally got our proofs from our yearly family photos...somehow in all of the craziness our photographers always get some great shots!!
Monday is
a Day 1 and music.
Please do not forget your instrument at home! Picture Day is taking place on Tuesday. Students
must be in full winter uniform, including blazers. No house hoodies please! We are hosting the bake sale this month,
which is taking place on Tuesday, October 29th and Wednesday,
October 30th. I am asking for donations of baked goods. Please ensure
they are completely nut free and please avoid items that may contain. Items
that contain or may contain nuts will be sent back home. Please check out our lost and found items, which is NOW
located in the gym in the far right corner. On Friday, November 8th at 4pm all
left over items will be donated to the local Salvation Army.
November Lunches
The lunch site is now open. It
will close Wednesday, October
30th at 3:00 PM.
Special of the month: Chicken Stir Fry, which
is available every Friday. All payments are to be made through Quickbooks
by November 6th. **Please do not order
lunch for Thursday, November 21st, as we will be on a trip – more
info to come later.**
Our next extra-curricular
activity is curling at the Acton
Curling Club. The dates and times of our trips are Monday, November 4th from 10-11 AM and Tuesday, November 19th
from 1-2 PM. Permission forms and waivers have been sent home and are due
back by Thursday, October 31st.
There is no cost associated with this trip. We are also planning a trip to the ROM on Thursday, November 21st.
It will be an all day trip so please do not order hot lunch for this day, as
reimbursements will not be given, nor will hot lunches be saved. If you are
interested in volunteering, please ensure you have a Vulnerable Sector Screen
on file with the school prior to the trip. If you have already submitted one,
please be sure to sign our annual defence declaration at the front reception.

Unit of Inquiry
Today
we learned about farmers, government officials, slaves, the record keepers, merchants, and artisans. We learned about the social classes of ancient Egypt and about who was on top of the social class pyramid and who was on the bottom. Ask me who was on the top and who was on the bottom.
The summative for this unit will have students recreating an ancient
artifact from one of the civilizations we studied. More information to come
closer to the end of the unit! As of now, we will be beginning the summative
the week of November 18th with a due date of Friday, November 30th.

Mathematics
Today we discussed cubic metres.
Distance is measured in linear unit – cm, m, km. Area is measured in square
units – cm 2, m2. Volume is measured in cubic units – cm3,
m3. Linear units would be the perimeter of an object or the length
of a pen. Square units would be the area of a desk or the area of a postage
stamp. Cubic units would be the space in an elevator or the space in a closet.
1 m = 100 cm (1 x 100)
1 m2 = 10,000 cm2 (100 x 100)
1 m3 = 1,000,000 cm3 (100 x 100 x 100)
As of now our math test for this unit will be Monday, November 4th.

The
small hand tells the hour, the large hand tells the minutes, and the skinny
hand tells the seconds.
Every
small mark on a clock represents the minutes. The total number of minutes
between each number on a clock is 5.

estimation, rounding to the nearest $50 or $100, to help us with this. Don’t

Surface area of a
rectangular prism (units square – cm2). Remember that to
find the area of a rectangle, we multiply the length by the width (l x w). In
order to find the surface area of a rectangular prism, we need to find the area
of the top and bottom faces, front and back faces, and right and left side
faces. Then we add those numbers together and multiply by 2 because a rectangle
is congruent – same shape and size.

Inquiry into Language
Today
we wrote our spelling test for lesson #7 and enjoyed some time on Typing Club. We also began reading chapter 19. All
chapters up to 19 should be complete. I was not very happy today with the
chapter 17 fill-in-the-blank questions. Almost everyone stayed in to re-do it.
There were in-correct answers, misspelled words, and no capitals for proper
nouns.
